Rayure, which is Arrent, in NE montaigne. farming community, all the farmers come from all 'round to trade and sell their grain and so on. and of course the taxes. anyway, posted there in preparation for the festival -- for three weeks before, the week of the festival, and two weeks after, at which time the tax monies are taken away and so on. you'll be on treasury duty in a couple weeks. 1 sol = 12 pistoles the local boss is Cedric. he's kind of a jerk but OK. a couple incidents in the first couple days. doing normal patrol, a pickpocket -- while they're watching the actors perform some kind of play -- Renaldo and Juliana (it's the big swordfight scene) some drunken merchants and farmers get into a brawl one night a gambling game going on, people watching a duel a tavern brawl, other muskeeter regiment, de la flamme some reports that some guys out the west gate are extorting an additional "entrance tax" on people a kid running with a stolen apple, angry merchant pursues. fried-thing-onna-stick? finally: http://www.beyond.fr/villages/lagnes.html is this other village they send a thing requesting some muskeeters. of course, as junior guys, you get sent. the elder, Remy, is this guy. smooth hands, despite being a villager. he has a bunch of problems they want solved. there are like 20 of them, dropping on successive days. problems they need solved: 1) make sure you're rested from your journey, that kind of thing 2) property line dispute -- some old historical thing, they can maybe dig up the documents from the priest's house (who is mysteriously away?) 3) a couple people want wills up-to-date (arguing about different inheritance, need somebody who can do math, etc, etc, where's my silver teapot that kind of thing) (one of them is dying) also, need to survey his field. 4) let's have a party 5) we must go and take a trip to the fountain to show you around. or you can go look. it's a nice half-day's journey. http://www.beyond.fr/villages/fontvaucluse.html anyway, the point is to kill about four days. hrm. F F F F F F F M M M M M M M V V V V V V V M M M M M M M R R R R R R R M M M M M M M 1 2 3 4 H H H H H H H -- finish late: after four days, run out of stuff to do, go back to city, arrested then it's kind of a mess. can they prove an alibi? maybe some kind of passing guy in a wagon who could witness (leaving the festival). then trying to track down the bandits -- finish early: well, if all else fails, they throw a party, tie 'em up More of de la Fleur's boys, eh? And they're letting in girls, too, I see. Well, I always say, if you see a recruit and they're as green as new apples and don't know which end of their blade is up, they're sure to be from de la Fleur. I don't expect any of you know what you're supposed to be doing here, so let me spell it out. Every year in Rayure the farmers come from all 'round to sell their harvest and buy tools for next year. There's trading, dancing, performing, that kind of thing. I'm sure it doesn't compare to the fancy parties you're all used to, but it'll do. Of course when outsiders come into the city, crime goes up. We get drinkin', brawlin', con-men, pick-pockets, the works. So that's why we called for the extra musketeers. Now, you boys are going to need some extra time to learn the lay of the land, I can just tell. So I figure you can do clerking the first week you're here, then I'll put you on market duty for a while until the festival's over, treasury duty after the festival, then patrol and cleanup. Any questions?
