Surprises in the first 30 pages of Moby Dick

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — inky @ 5:04 pm

I started reading Moby Dick last night. I had assumed I basically knew the book via the cultural zeitgeist, but it turns out I was totally wrong. Like, here is what I found out in just the first couple dozen pages:

  1. It’s a comedy.
  2. The protagonist is not a sailor by profession.
  3. The first words are not “Call me Ishmael.”

At this rate, I am starting to think I’ll be wrong about Ahab and the whale teaming up at the end to fight off nazis.

  1. I look forward to your take on “the whiteness of the whale”

  2. Well done, you had me going there. I actually just went to look it up.

  3. Hi Dan, do you have more book reviews somewhere separate from game stuff? I know I came across some some time ago. I’m looking for ideas for my bookclub.

  4. Yeah, I do. In addition to the few book reviews on this blog itself, I have more on my (no longer updated) livejournal. Also, in general, you may want to check out the ifMUD bookclub which has reviews from a few other people as well.
