Roundup

Been a couple months since I posted, but the upside of having a small (but elite) cadre of readers is most of them know what’s been up anyway. In short:

  • XYZZY Awards: See you next year! (hopefully more organized next time)
  • PAX East/IF Summit: An excess of awesome. I mean that literally, but if that is the only way to get my awesome I will take it.
  • New job: Here, starting in, oh, twenty minutes or so. I have done some quick calculations and determined that, based on graphing time started job vs distance between job and house, I will be operating out of my bedroom by 2016 or so.
  • Books: ok, that isn’t going to fit into this format.

Doc Holmes

Filed under: Uncategorized — inky @ 1:18 am

I just got back from the Sherlock Holmes movie and boy are my deer tired. Of being stalked. Uh, anyway. My main thoughts are 1) yeah, that was pretty gay 2) everything with Moriarty was lame and 3) this makes a way better Victorian Doc Savage movie than it does a Sherlock Holmes movie. Not that I disliked it, you understand. Just that the ways it tended to diverge from Holmes canon are almost all ways that actually fit just fine into the Doc Savage style. (This has movie spoilers, of course.)

FATE <=> Nobilis

This post about spells in FATE got me thinking about FATE/Nobilis mashups. I couldn’t decide which way to go so I decided I’d do them both.

Physical Spells

I realize there’s virtually no demand on this blog for system hacks for pre-4e D&D, but I didn’t let that stop me before, so I don’t see why not to proceed now. Plus I still see people talking about this on enworld when I go there, since they are basically permanently stuck in a 4e-vs-3.5e turf war, so I’m still thinking about it. Right, then.

One of the main things that strikes me about magic in Conan (and other sword & sorcery properties like Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser) that isn’t represented well in most role-playing games is how physical it all is.

This is the second half of my review of the Amelia Peabody series from part 1. You’ll want to read that before going on.

Amelia Peabody series (part 1)

So, I’ve finished another mammoth read, this time of the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters (which I gather is a pseudonym for Barbara Mertz). This is one of those series I have a long-running interaction with: I read the first book probably fifteen years ago and didn’t realize it wasn’t a standalone. Then I stumbled on some sequels, read them kind of out of order, started seriously following the series and buying them as they came out, lost interest and stopped. Earlier this year I decided to get serious and re-read the series from scratch and so here’s the review. As usual for this it has some spoilers; this one in particular has a minor surprise plot development at the end of the first book that is inevitably spoiled by discussion of the series, but I’ll try to stay away from the major stuff. If you don’t want any spoilers at all, just pick up Crocodile on the Sandbank and come back to this when you’ve finished. Otherwise, onward:

Do or do not

We hired a new junior dev at work recently, which got me thinking about what pearls of wisdom* I have to impart to new programmers (not that anyone is asking, but maybe I can slip them into fortune cookies or something).

IF Competition 2009 Reviews

It’s time for IF Competition Reviews, doo-te-doo-te-doo. Normally I would be more on the ball and get them out in chunks during the comp period, but this year I was lucky to get anything done at all. Still, here they are, in all their glory. Share and enjoy. (And if you want more reviews to read, there are plenty on the wiki)

Bearenstein bear

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — inky @ 8:12 pm

I was at the mall the other day and walked by a Build-a-bear workshop, which I don’t think I’ve ever done before. Have people seen these? They’re really creepy. Like, the premise is you come in and assemble a bear and design it to your specifications. That is a little weird but it’s not any weirder than, say, Project Aiko. No, what weirds me out is the Build-a-bear promise:

My bear is special
I brought it to life
I choose it
I stuffed it
Now I am taking it home
Best friends are forever
So I promise right now
To make my bear my
#1 PAL !

Have we heard this before? We sure have.

And really, considered in that light, the stores make a lot more sense – how better to recruit an army of willing soldiers than to indoctrinate kids when they’re young, get them to swear an oath of permanent loyalty and then, years later, the bears call in their favors.

Of course, there’s another obvious thing it’s like. (And for people who think I misspelled the post title, just consider The Berenstain Bears and the Hunchbacked Grave-Robber.)
