He was tall and ungainly, his parents were poor, and, worst of all, he was Castillian. At the age of eight he went to his father Anthoine and declared that he was going to run away and become a farm-hand. Anthoine sighed, consulted with his wife Marie, and sat Sebastien down for a little chat. "Sebastien, my son," he said, "To be Castillian is not a shame, but an honor. We moved here because when Queen Rosa, Theus keep her soul, married King Leon, we realized that the future of the world would grow from Montaigne. We moved here and enrolled you in school to learn and study and become a diplomat so that you would rise to power in the courts as Montaigne blossomed in the world. But -- and never forget this -- you are not Montaigne. You cry because you are not Montaigne enough for your classmates to accept you, and yet I tell you this: you will never gain acceptance from others until you accept yourself. You have a Castillian soul, and though we adopt their customs and dress as their dress, inside we are not them. From now on, at home we will speak Castillian. I will be Antonio again, your mother will be Maria, and you will be Sabastian Brasa." And so it was. At home, Anthoine taught Sebastien his Castillian heritage, including his family's traditional sword-fighting techniques. At school and then at university, Sebastien was the perfect Montaigne gentleman, learning the ways of the court and the ways of the world. When he graduated Sebastien spent a year or two in a series of small positions before moving to Charouse, where an unexpected tavern brawl led to a fast friendship with fellow diplomat Alixandre Leuridan. The two of them served together at a post in a Vodacce town, and were especially pleased with themselves when, on the very night they returned, they were just in time to heroically foil a kidnapping and save a young and beautiful noblewoman. Unfortunately, it turned out the kidnapping had been arranged by a lord of the court in an attempt to set up a heroic rescue opportunity for himself. Annoyed about the interference, and having some influence with the king, he arranged to have Sebastien and Alixandre posted far, far away in Ussura -- where, his sources told him, relations with Montaigne were about to break down very shortly. A month later, Sebastien and Alixandre arrived in Ussura blissfully unaware of the new political situation, and ready to take over embassy duties.
