Ennis O'Malley is constantly surprising people. First at how quick he is to take offense, then at how quick he is to block their punch, and last at how quickly he lays them out with his beer mug. Other people in the bar are then surprised by how quick the guards are to let him go after he's told them a few jokes and assured them it was all the other guy's fault. Despite the occasional outbursts, Ennis is really quite reasonable, and so it's a little unusual that he is suddenly very interested in accumulating a very large sum of money, and seems willing to take any risk to get it.
