When they mature and form a pair-bond, their brains create paired wormholes through which neurons grow, giving them essentially a single brain. Naturally creating even this pinprick wormhole requires a large amount of energy, proportional to the distance between the birds, which explains why they tend to weaken when separated. This suggests the teleporters work by temporarily expanding the wormhole and using it for transport.
