There's a whole fenced-off section that the common rabble aren't permitted inside, and so naturally Antheunis wriggles his way under the fence. Inside are, curiously, picks, shovels, struts, and lanterns -- everything you'd need for a mining operation. Just as he finishes gathering it all in, he notices two distinct things: first, a folded note dropped on the ground on the other side of the pile of equipment; and second, the voice of one of the fence guards saying "ok, I'll take a look inside -- you watch the gate". This is a fenced-off area in the corner -- it backs against the courtyard walls on two sides (which are fairly high on this part of the courtyard), and is fenced in on two sides. And yeah, right now you can dive out under the fence as the guy comes in, and presumably won't be seen, or you can run around the equipment to grab the note, but then you'll be on the other side of the equipment from the guy and the hole under the fence (which doesn't guarantee you'll be seen, it just puts you in a spot).
