Underground lab and mysterious figure
Boudin's vibe is that the figure doesn't have any job or duty as such, but nevertheless it's unable to leave for some reason, so it's clearly still under some obligation or geas.
Willem steps forward and attempts to negotiate. As he summons up the sensations of the desert, the figure cocks its head to the side, as if listening. The sandstorm dies away as it waits, and then finally it speaks again: "Distant near, but near not yet distant? Bound and kept to wait and watch, endless seasons brought forth from traveled vessel then a promise, a wisp, a gibe? .. A single coin is not the sultan's price, the curved barb stings the selfsame scale!" The wind whips up higher than ever.
In the breeze, one of the gems rolls off the shelf, and Antheunis reflexively leaps forward to catch it before it hits the ground. He snatches it from the air, but the action has attracted the figure's attention, and a voice comes from the whirlwind: "Pearl, star, poisoned wine. Other songs shadowed, lend strange cast, to ask sinks below the fire."
It's hard to tell, but Boudin thinks things are reaching a breaking-point here.
Off to the side, Aernoud whistles for his bird. It flutters and darts through the air, sometimes vanishing entirely and reappearing elsewhere. It is buffeted by the wind, but nevertheless manages to cross the room and snatch up the wand from the pile at the base of the bookshelf. Some further flutters, and the wand drops into Aernoud's hand. It's a slim bone wand, polished smooth, and featureless except for a rune on the flat end of the handle, and a spiraling line cut into the tip.
Meanwhile, Lazer backs out of the room and runs back along the tunnel to where he remembered seeing some pipes visible in the roof. Examining them, he thinks he's determined the appropriate valve to turn in order to, hopefully, overload the pipes in the laboratory ceiling and flood it with water.
