Armed with the knowledge that there used to be maintenance work done on the fire and water islands, the group did some more research and discovered that there used to be a Mechanics Guild, largely populated by Shad, that had lost political favor over the years and finally had been disbanded entirely about 50 years ago. Sejik found the great-grandson of a former Mechanics Guild member, and discovered that the old Mechanics Guild Hall was now owned by the University, not far from where Aescher lived. The two of them went there in the now-late-evening, where they were spotted by Aescher's neighbor [Helena?], a kind old lady who wondered if 'those nice young men' had found her. 'uh-oh, we're being followed' says everyone, and while Sejik scoots around inside the OMGH (Old Mechanics Guild Hall) and discovers a maintenance book with instructions on how to get from island to island with the pyramids as keys, the rest of the group reconvenes and works out that Aescher is indeed being followed.

Rather than try to shake her pursuers, they decide to let it play out, and themselves follow Aescher back to her apartment to see what happens. And what happens is that she gets attacked and the runestones are nearly stolen! Happily, Zahra manages to interpose herself between [Faith?] the fleeing air mage and Aescher's window, and gets Aescher's satchel back, but before Faith makes her getaway, she casts what Aescher recognizes as a sort of tracking spell, which seems to be focused on either the satchel itself, or something inside it (presumably the runestones). The rest of the group was defeated and interrogated, with people learning:

  • They were from the 'conservative' faction of the Crimson Hawks, who continue under the leadership of Alder, a grizzled elf battle veteran.
  • Most of the air mages defected with Luna; Faith was one of the few to stay (partially because it made her that much more valuable to Alder).
  • They were indeed after the runestones.
  • They had planted a booby trap in the group's abandoned boat when they were on the water island, but the group never returned to the boat.

Unfortunately, one of Garnet's young cousins (Julia) was playing with some friends on the water island and set of the booby trap herself and was seriously injured. She is currently in the hospital, and is where Garnet was during the week's adventure.
