Armed with the knowledge gained from the bronze discs and holding the odd chess piece, the group made their way up the tower once again to the top turret room, where they were eventually worked out that placing the piece at a particular point in the shadow of the sun would turn the window into a portal to a 'path' of sorts: an etherial highway to the sun. The group traveled into space along this path, at one point hitting a 'slow point' where their speed greatly decreased, and in which they were attacked by some sort of etherial space ticks. Finally, they made their way all the way to the sun, where the Fiery Hall awaited them!

Within the Fiery Hall, they met some boisterous Fire Titans who lived there, and found a bazaar where Salamanders from the sun's core came up to trade their wares. The 'Vortex of the Icy Spear' from their map turned out to be a portal to the negative material plane, a leftover artifact from an earlier war between the titans and the Doomguard. The 'normal' way to visit the Fiery Hall seemed to be through the use of plane-hopping or space-traversing ships, a derelict one of which was still docked off to one side.

After negotiations with the titans didn't go anywhere (the group was boisterously turned down), they managed to strike a deal with the Salamanders: they would provide some of the lichen they harvested from around the salt tower, and the salamanders would develop it into a potion that could close a portal to the negative material plane. The party would then agree to help try to close the Vortex of the Icy Sphere using those potions, and, in exchange, the salamanders would take the pyramid to the Plane of Fire and activate it, restoring the Web's sun.

So, with that plan in place, the group positioned itself at five points surrounding the Vortex, while the Salamanders stopped the sun's gasses from being sucked in. Unfortunately, as soon as the vapor stopped pouring into the Vortex, ghosts emerged, attacking the party (generally suspended on ropes, dangling towards the Vortex). Valiantly fighting off the ghosts, a highlight of the battle occurred when Sejik tossed a potion that he didn't know what it would do at a ghost--and ended up switching places with it! Falling towards the Vortex, he hurled his potion at it before being rescued from certain annihilation by Hark, commanding a group of Titans.

In the end, the Vortex was closed by the awesome powers of the lichen potions, and the party was congratulated and roundly toasted, while a Salamander took a pyramid off to the Plane of Fire. The Salamanders and Titans also offered to let the party take the (damaged) derelict ship if they wished (the 'serpentine galleon'), which apparently had been abandoned there by a group of adventurers many years ago, during the Doomguard/Titan war. (The group got the sense that they'd almost be doing them more of a favor than the other way 'round--the ship was taking up valuable dock space, but nobody seemed willing to get rid of it, since the former owners were instrumental in the War. On the other hand, hey, space-faring ship that might be able to travel the planes too, if fixed!)
