Cadiz says, "Greetings! My name is Brother Cadiz. I just visited the House of Mercy, and the priest there told us that some letters had been stolen from him recently."

Gamemaster asks, "Letters? You mean the rubbed out one on his sign?"

Cadiz says, "No, paperwork, that kind of thing."

Cadiz frowns.

Gamemaster says, "Yes, yes, just joshing you."

Cadiz grins.

[Crows-Nest] CharlesAlgun exclaims, "You stole my Arr!"

CharlesAlgun smirks.

Cadiz exclaims, "Got me there!"

Gamemaster asks, "Yes, I've looked into it. What do you ask?"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "Logan: A man who takes his work seriously."

Cadiz asks, "At any rate, one of the letters applied to me, and I hoped to be able to recover it. Did you ever find the culprit?"

Gamemaster says, "Well, yes, in a way."

Gamemaster says, "Found doesn't necessarily mean caught."

CharlesAlgun asks, "You know who it was, then?"

Gamemaster says, "Well, after dredging around for witnesses, it seems a stranger was about during the time of the crime that nobody ever talked to and nobody ever saw since."

CharlesAlgun frowns.

CharlesAlgun asks, "Did they say what he might have looked like?"

Gamemaster says, "Slightly conflicting reports on his description. Definitely tall. Grubby brown hair."

Gamemaster says, "A couple different varieties of weight. Squinty eyes, dark, black almost."

Gamemaster says, "Three different types of nose."

Cadiz says, "So, we're looking for a three-nostrilled man."

CharlesAlgun asks, "How do you know it was the same person?"

Bjorg arrives, looking for booty.

Gamemaster says, "Well, those couple things were close enough, and really, if you've ever done any sort of investigating, this sort of thing 'appens."

CharlesAlgun looks up. "How about that tree right there?"

Cadiz thwaps Charles on the shoulder.

Cadiz says, "I'll have you know I'm pretty pleased with this. It's not easy."

CharlesAlgun says, "Oh, no offense to your work."

Cadiz raises an eyebrow.

CharlesAlgun says, "I just pity the poor fellow with that chin. He could never find a collar that'd go over it."

CharlesAlgun says, "Let's stop for lunch at the tavern, then we can find Jack."

Cadiz asks, "Well, what now? Shall we follow this, and head inland, or shall we stick with the original plan and keep sailing?"

CharlesAlgun says, "I would say, keep sailing. We're not likely to find him within the day, and we do have a long voyage ahead of us."

CharlesAlgun asks, "Do you disagree?"

Cadiz says, "I suppose we have another option. The land's relatively constricted here, and if I'm not mistaken we're almost directly across from your home town--some of us could head overland that way, and meet up with the ship once we get there."

Gamemaster says, "The barkeep at present is a woman. Very muscular and stern looking, and gives you a cold stare as you put in your order."

CharlesAlgun smiles, "Thanks."

Gamemaster says, "The place is empty of other customers right now, but you hear some people talking outside as if they are about to go in."

Gamemaster says, "Four short men with heavy beards walk in. They appear to be arguing."

Gamemaster says, "...bloody 'ell. I'm just keepin' all my money until someone comes an' asks. No need to mess with their politics."

CharlesAlgun eats his stew, listening idly to the conversation.

Gamemaster says, "Ey, I hear it won't end until they just flat out kill each other. Could take six months for that at least."

Cadiz says (under his breath, to Charles) "That's right, the problem with the taxes and whatnot."

CharlesAlgun nods sagely.

Gamemaster says, "And these papers being 'em all secretive -- who cares? Just drink yourself some beer and stop worrying your head."

Cadiz's ears perk up, and he listens more intently.

Gamemaster asks, "But, look --" the only one with brown hair says, the rest are black "-- was there a stranger or wasn't there?"

Gamemaster says, "Eh, 'course there was. Now follow 'is advice and drink yer bere."

CharlesAlgun says (quietly, in Castillian, to Cadiz), "Should we try to talk to the brown-haired one alone?"

Cadiz waits for a time when the brown-haired man looks as if he's about to go up to the bar for something, and goes up himself to chat with the bartender about the eastern towns.

Gamemaster asks (of Cadiz), "Hm? What do you want to know about 'em?"

Gamemaster says, "[oh, thought you might want to ask something specific]"

Cadiz says, "Oh, any we should avoid, any we should definitely visit..."

CharlesAlgun finishes his stew and heads up to the bar to refill his drink.

Cadiz says, "Oh, we're trying to get to [name of Charles' home town], and thought we'd travel over-land."

Cadiz asks, "Say, I heard you talking about some papers? Are these the ones stolen from the House of Mercy?"

Gamemaster says, "Hm? Yeah, those."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "(Lamstead)"

Gamemaster says, "Nobody seems too un'appy about it."

Cadiz asks, "Really?"

Gamemaster says, "Most everyone here figures that Vaticine chap is just trying to schmooze off enough money so he can take off with it."

Cadiz nods.

Cadiz says, "He claimed his sermons were very popular."

Cadiz asks, "Is he new in town?"

Gamemaster asks, "Um, set up shop, what, twelve months ago?"

Gamemaster says, "Right, well, Vaticine got kicked out of 'ere with all the rest of Avalon a long time ago, so that's what we're figurin'."

Cadiz nods.

Cadiz says, "And now someone stole papers from him? That just seems odd."

Cadiz says, "Dockmaster said it was some stranger."

CharlesAlgun says, "What would some strange want with a bunch of papers, I wonder."

Gamemaster says, "Well, heard a couple people talk of a stranger, yeah, but all their stories be abit different and I'm frankly quite confused 'bout the whole deal. Now I'd like to get back to this beer."

CharlesAlgun says (to Man), "Sure. That one's on us."

CharlesAlgun slips a few pence to the barkeep.

Gamemaster says, "Mmf. K. Thank you."

Cadiz asks (of bartender), "Were you one of the ones that saw the stranger?"

Gamemaster says (to Cadiz), "No."

Cadiz says, "Oh, well."

Cadiz heads back to his seat.

Cadiz says (to Charles), "[in castillian again] I have a new theory."

Cadiz says, "The stolen papers have something to do with the power structure in this town."

CharlesAlgun nods, sipping his drink.

Cadiz says, "And the folks on one guy's side were told they saw this mysterious stranger."

CharlesAlgun answers, in Castillian, "Including 'Leonard'?"

Cadiz nods.

Cadiz says, "Maybe I can get descriptions from other people of this guy; see if they really match at all."

Cadiz finishes his lunch.

Cadiz listens to the nearby table for any more interesting conversation.

(From Gamemaster) [Quiet munching.]

Cadiz says (to Charles), "Let's go talk to Logan again."

CharlesAlgun finishes his drink. "Sure."

CharlesAlgun follows Cadiz.

Cadiz goes to talk to Logan.

(From Gamemaster) Trudging resumes

Gamemaster says (to Cadiz), "Oh, 'lo. Was just about to go off on a walk."

Cadiz says (to Logan), "Thanks for the information about Leonard, it was quite helpful, and I managed to get a pretty good picture of him."

Cadiz shows Logan the picture.

Cadiz asks, "I'd like to run it by some of the others that saw him. You don't happen to have a list, do you?"

Gamemaster says, "Mm. Interesting eyes, there. Seems to be 'bout right."

Gamemaster says, "Well, there's Margaret, Toby, and Faradin. Last two are out of town, now, you might still be able to find Margaret."

Cadiz nods, writes the names down.

Cadiz asks, "Any others?"

Gamemaster says, "That's the other three."

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "[You don't have to make up a bunch of names if you don't want. I'll just assume '"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "'a list of 8 names' or whatever.]"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "Or 4 names."

Gamemaster says, "Margaret's a rover, doesn't live right in town usually, but she has a shack out of town that's technically hers, you can try there."

Cadiz nods.

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "well, except it's only 4 people"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Whoops, OK. Lag ;-)"

Cadiz asks, "Where are Toby and Faradin?"

Gamemaster says, "Sailing."

Gamemaster says, "Won't be back in a week."

Cadiz says, "Oh, I had another question."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "This isn't Carleon here. Their town drunk has to moonlight as the tailor and the evil guy with the funny hat who sits in the back row everyplace."

Cadiz asks, "What's the deal with the disputed territory or taxes or jurisdiction or whatever? Two competing nobles, I take it?"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Heh."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "Except on Sundays, when he plays the piano at the House of Me cy."

Gamemaster says, "Something like that. I try to stay out of that business."

Cadiz asks, "Who are the nobles?"

Gamemaster says, "Selkirk and Borodium. I'd rather not talk about 'em if you don't mind."

Cadiz frowns.

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Yeah, I didn't remember if he was or not."

Cadiz asks, "Hard to stay neutral?"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "The people in this town are oddly recalcitrant."

Cadiz says, "Well, it's just--I thought it might have something to do with the theft."

CharlesAlgun says, "So do you think there really was a stranger or there wasn't? Leonard seemed to have a fairly decent idea of what he saw."

Cadiz nods.

Cadiz says, "And if it matches to a fair extent what Margaret saw, it means they both saw *something*."

Cadiz says, "But we're in illusion-land now, so anything's possible."

CharlesAlgun says, "I wouldn't show her the picture to begin with, though."

Cadiz says, "Right."

Cadiz asks, "I wonder why it took a while for him to figure out who was the least drunk of his witnesses if there were only four, two of whom were out of town?"

Gamemaster says, "The shack in question is past the east edge of town nestled between two hills."

Gamemaster says, "It looks like it was carted over in pieces from some other location -- salvaged, perhaps."

CharlesAlgun asks, "Good question. Do you think he's under someone's thumb?"

CharlesAlgun looks over the area.

Cadiz says, "Could be. Seemed very recalcitrant to discuss the issue at all, though, which makes me think he's scared of both sides, and doesn't want anything he said about one misconstrued."

CharlesAlgun says, "Mmm. What about the churchman? He didn't seem to concerned over his thefts."

CharlesAlgun says, "That man at the bar seemed to imply that there were folks who didn't care much for the minister."

Cadiz knocks on the door to the shack.

Gamemaster asks, "You hear a voice from someone hidden behind you --"what you be beating on my shack for?"

Cadiz says, "Is that Margaret? Dockmaster Logan sent me; said you might be able to help me with something."

Gamemaster asks, "Aye?"

Gamemaster asks, "What about?"

Cadiz asks, "He said you saw a stranger in town a day or two ago?"

Gamemaster asks, "Stranger?"

Gamemaster says, "Er, oh yes, yeah, I saw a stranger. Tall bloke."

Gamemaster says, "Squinty eyes."

Gamemaster says, "Didn't get a good look at 'im."

Cadiz looks around, trying to find Margaret.

CharlesAlgun asks, "What about his chin? Kinda sloping, really weak, needed a beard?"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "er, s/find/see. I'm not searching the hills or anything."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun had a picture of Cadiz picking up bits of debris, peeking behind bushes, etc.

Gamemaster says, "Er, yeah, like that."

CharlesAlgun asks, "And his nose, was it sort of a pug? Kinda little and round?"

CharlesAlgun asks (of Cadiz), "Well, I think she's sticking to her story. We'll have to find someone else who's willing to tell us what really happened. You still have those five pounds, for the reward?"

Gamemaster gibbers.

Gamemaster asks, "Reward?"

Cadiz says, "Yes, I still have it. Oh, well, maybe we'll get to keep it for ourselves."

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "woo, finally getting the cleverness :-)"

CharlesAlgun says (to Margaret), "Well, thanks for your time. If you, uh, remember anything else... you just let us know."

Gamemaster spits.

Gamemaster says, "Fine, I'll tell you the whole bloody thing. Guess it doesn't matter anyway."

Gamemaster says, "See, we's all gathering and getting riled up at that Vaticine guy. Bloody filth, he is."

[Crows-Nest] Cadiz says, "Sara waves."

Gamemaster says, "Anyway, all the eyes in the room sortsa glare at Logan when he makes some defensive comment, and to reperate he says he'll see about tryin' something to drive him out."

[Crows-Nest] CharlesAlgun waves back. "Don't tell her about you and Margaret. She might get jealous..."

[Crows-Nest] Gamemaster exclaims, "hi sara!"

[Crows-Nest] inky says, "tell her to look at the bb on #musketeers"

CharlesAlgun nods, "Mmm. Yes?"

Gamemaster says, "eeagh bb spammed"

Gamemaster has disconnected.

Gamemaster steps behind the curtain.

Gamemaster says, "Anyways, so he arranges to steal out their files, and get some of us ta tell somethin' about a stranger comin' to town who was all mysterious like."

Gamemaster says, "He says be sure to act mysterious about the noble taxin' stuff 'cause it'll make it look more like a big conspiracy."

Gamemaster says, "Anyway, didn't work. Bloody Vaticine fellow is still here."

Gamemaster says, "Money grubbin' lout."

Gamemaster asks, "So, where'sm that reward?"

Cadiz asks, "Why would he want to steal the files?"

Cadiz digs around in his purse while listening for the answer.

CharlesAlgun smiles at Cadiz.

CharlesAlgun grins.

Gamemaster says, "Give it here and I'll show ya."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun asks, "Is Cadiz idle?"

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "dunno"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "He's carrying the cash."

Cadiz gives Margaret six pounds.

CharlesAlgun tucks them into his shirt, out of sight.

[7thsea] Gamemaster asks, "um, is that IF player pockets there?"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Heh."

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Afk a sec..."

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "You have a walrus, a refrigerator, and a pirate hook. The sun is gone. It must be brought."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun laughs.

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun asks, "Are these papers too much to carry?"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "Margaret seemed to handle that box with no trouble."

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "it's not heavy, just alot of papesr"

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "and yeah, you can theoretically stick it in your shirt, I was just being ornery"

CharlesAlgun takes off his cloak and folds it into an approximate satchel, which he puts the papers in.

CharlesAlgun ties this makeshift carry-on baggage over his shoulder.

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "So there :)"

Cadiz says (to Margaret), "Well, you've been a great help."

CharlesAlgun says, "Yes, thank you."

Gamemaster says, "Aye."

CharlesAlgun heads back toward the stown.

Cadiz says (to Margaret), "And, my child, know that not *all* from the Vaticine are as... greedy... as others."

Cadiz smiles and holds up his ankh.

Cadiz says, "Don't worry, the priest will never know of your involvement."

Cadiz heads back to town.

CharlesAlgun asks (of Cadiz, in Castillian), "Do you still want to travel overland, even without the mysterious stranger to chase after?"

[7thsea] Cadiz asks, "Does this priest have a name?"

Cadiz says, "Might be interesting for a change of pace, if nothing else."

CharlesAlgun nods.

Cadiz asks, "You don't have any western haunts you'd want to revisit, for old time's sake?"

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "heh. even the GM forgot it. one sec."

CharlesAlgun says, "We should still meet Bjorg and Jack back at the ship, though. You can finish drafting that letter while I arrange supplies."

Cadiz nods.

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun asks, "Do we need horses to maintain the schedule and meet the ship on time?"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun asks, "Or was that based on foot travel?"

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "Mario Alvarez. just looking at transcript, guess never got mentioned"

Cadiz says, "Heading east might be a good way to cover for returning the papers to that poor priest. We can just send them back after we're gone."

CharlesAlgun nods. "And we'll want time to look at them anyway. If nothing else, to see what they were told about you."

Cadiz nods.

(From CharlesAlgun) (trudge trudge trudge)

Gamemaster says, "[I'm just waiting for cues if you are doing anything more special, or just gathering stuff to go. if the latter we'll switch to riding mode]"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Let's go ahead and fast-forward. Go back, drop off letter, make arrangements, head east."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "I'm ready to switch."

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Do we want the talon with us, or with the ship? I'm thinking the ship."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun puts the papers in his pack, and turns his cloak back into a cloak :)

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says (to Cadiz), "'Jack' will probably keep it with him."

CharlesAlgun manages, by dint of supreme effort, to stay on the horse. Until we're out of sight of the town.

CharlesAlgun then proceeds to fall off twice.

Gamemaster asks, "Do you want to swerve west of the mountains or east?"

Cadiz says (to Logan), "This is a long shot, but I don't suppose you recognize this person? [pulls out the picture of the dead guy from Scene 1.]"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "Also, is anyone else hearing riding music in their head, roughly to the tune of Bonanza."

[7thsea] Cadiz asks (of GM), "Aren't we heading east? And would need to swerve north or south?"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun asks, "I think east would be more direct, right?"

[7thsea] Gamemaster says (to Cadiz), "good synapsing"

Gamemaster says (to Cadiz), "Yes."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun asks, "I think south would be more direct, wouldn't it?"

Cadiz blinks. "You do? Who is he?"

Gamemaster says, "Henry Percival. Haven't seen him in years. He went elsewhere for better fishing waters."

Cadiz asks, "He's from this area?"

Gamemaster says, "No, floated in here for a couple years."

Gamemaster says, "I don't remember where he's actually from, been too long."

Cadiz asks, "A fisherman, then?"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun exclaims, "A time traveller, of course!"

Gamemaster says, "Well, not all that good at catching fish, at least around here, but enough for him to have money, I s'pose. Although it is rather odd, he seemed to have more than I would think of 'im."

Cadiz says, "Huh."

Cadiz asks, "Anyone in town he was close to?"

Cadiz says, "Or knew well enough that they might remember where he was from, at least."

Gamemaster says, "Can't remember so. He kept to himself. Oh -- he did come from a town up east a bit, was there a couple years too. Roestock."

Cadiz says, "But not originally."

Gamemaster says, "Right, I don't remember originally. Not sure if he even said"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Dangit, now I want to stay with the boat and ask around at Roestock ;-)"

[7thsea] Cadiz says, "Maybe I'll just ask Jack to take the picture around."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun asks, "Wait, why?"

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "Oh, OK. I wasn't sure if Margaret's comments meant that the whole nobles business was blown out of proportion for the sake of mysterious conspiracy."

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "but that would require RPing."

[7thsea] CharlesAlgun says, "But never mind then. Carry on."

[7thsea] Gamemaster says, "actually, can we saving the riding until next time? This is going to be rather complicated (only one major event on the way, but it'll take a while)"

CharlesAlgun asks (of Cadiz, on the hoof), "Won't Logan be surprised when he finds out that we caught the mysterious stranger?"
