Eolo exclaims (at Diego), "very true!"

Eolo asks (of Diego&Era), "so, perhaps you two would accompany the lady and I to the woods whilst Maxwell consults with Brunhilde?"
DiegoValdez says (to Max), "It shouldn't take too long. We'll be back before you're packed."

Eolo walks to the woods with the others, stopping ten or twenty feet back from the cave.
Maxwell says, "Right. No terrible urgency here, anyway."
Eolo drops to one knee, looking for recent tracks.

Ghogg says (to Maxwell), "She opens the door. "Yes?""
Eolo walks over to the trapdoor and examines the stick he had wedged lightly over it. Moved?
Ghogg says, "Not moved."
Eolo nods.
DiegoValdez chuckles. "Eolo, you are far too suspicious. What could possibly go wrong?"
Eolo says, "it appears he hasn't been back -- unless he was the whistling fellow and is long gone."
Maxwell says (to Brunhilde), "My back's been bothering me a bit after that blow from the monster yesterday. I thought you might check that it isn't too serious."
Ghogg says, "However, roll perception"
Ghogg says, "everyone at the area"

Giovanna raises one eyebrow at the reference to other appendages.

Eolo grins.
Maxwell steps in and lifts his shirt to show the bruise.
Eolo says, "surely the lady is not so foolish as to be only as suspicious as those around her."
Ghogg says, "Hm..."

Eolo walks over to the lever, and looks to see if the mechanism has been altered at all

Eolo pulls the lever.
Ghogg says, "<creak>"
Era_Khar'Kov steps back from the trapdoor.
Ghogg says, "it opens."
Ghogg says, "nobody visible."
Eolo lights a lantern, and steps over to the entrance.
Eolo looks down the stairs, to see if he can see the corpse at the bottom still.
Ghogg says, "The corpse is gone."
Era_Khar'Kov says (to Eolo), "If we're going inside, I'll wait till later for a different view."
DiegoValdez says (to Eolo), "If you think there have been suspicious shenanigans, perhaps I should lead the way in."
Ghogg says, "There's still bones and blood around."
Era_Khar'Kov draws her knife.
Eolo says, "it's gone."
Giovanna peeks around Eolo.
Maxwell goes back to the Eisenfu"rst's grounds and starts getting things together for the journey.
Eolo says, "interesting that such a large body was removed, all in a single night, and with no tracks"

DiegoValdez mutters something about Legion.
Era_Khar'Kov asks (of Giovanna), "There's a small chance it could have been buried.  Did you see anything we could prod how deep it is outside?"
Eolo says, "I had thought we left the teleporting sorcerers behind in Montaigne."
Eolo says, "but I suppose there is no reason for that to be the case."
Ghogg asks (of Maxwell), "doing anything in particular?"
Era_Khar'Kov says, "To see if the sand is very deep."
Maxwell asks (of Ghogg), "Are there horses we can use?"
Eolo looks to see if the sand is just sprinkled on the floor, or if the floor is actually composed of sand in part.
[7thsea] Ghogg says, "I seem to recall you didn't drop your horses off at Lowenherz's"
DiegoValdez says, "Well, I see no need to dig up the body....."
[7thsea] Eolo says, "at the inn, I guess."
[7thsea] Maxwell says, "Oh. Well I was doing other stuff during that part."
DiegoValdez says, "Let's just look around and make sure there aren't any other surprises lurking, and get back to Maxwell."
[7thsea] Ghogg says, "there's no other horses, if you had something in mind"
Giovanna says, "There might be a stick or something about."
Eolo says, "we are in a forest, after all."

Maxwell retrieves the horses from the inn and loads them with the usual travel gear, plus extra changes of clothes for everyone.

DiegoValdez says, "Looks like our friend expected us back ... there's a trap of some sort set up back at the alcove."

[Crows-Nest] Eolo says, "he's saving his energy for dancing later on"

Eolo asks, "what sort?"

Giovanna goes over to examine the trap.
Giovanna says, "Nice work."
Eolo walks with her.

Eolo says, "it's not clear what it's intended to accomplish"
Eolo says, "but it'd probably be a bad idea to pull the wire."
Eolo taps on the wall with the hole.
Giovanna says (to Eolo), "If you do decide to pull it, let me know so I can go upstairs."

Eolo says (to Era), "I do have this rope in my pack"
Giovanna says, "I'll come back later and see if any pieces are left, of course."

Ghogg says, "There's some sort of compartment in there"

Eolo prods the wall experimentally with his knife, to see if he can cut into it.

Giovanna taps her foot on the ground and looks around a little.
Eolo says, "if it's only attached loosely to the other wall, hmm"

Giovanna says, "One could, I suppose, simply CUT the wire."

Eolo says, "one sort of trap might be triggered when the wire retracts"
Giovanna says, "Or would the release of -- ah."
Eolo says, "as if a careless shin had dislodged it"
Giovanna tries to look as though she knew that.
[Crows-Nest] Rudiger says, "Get a bunch of people muttering that at varying tones and it sounds surprising like a group of people talking."
Eolo says, "but you are correct, another possibility would be that it is triggered if pulled"
[Crows-Nest] Era_Khar'Kov chuckles.
Eolo says, "in that case, though, I would think it would be fastened more securely to the other wall"
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell asks, "What, wouldn't an occasional 's' sound help?"
Giovanna says, "Ah"
[Crows-Nest] Rudiger says, "So say 'rhubarbs' occasionally."
Giovanna says, "In neither case would I care to be in the vicinity when the thing occurred.  I was merely suggesting possibilities for the person who chooses to test it."
Era_Khar'Kov volunteers.
Eolo says, "there is, admittedly, the feint or double-feint trap, where it only goes off when the obvious trap is disarmed"
Maxwell makes sure to pack a few sausages for the road.
Eolo says, "but those are generally more clever than effective"
Giovanna says, "That relies a great deal on the cleverness of the trapped.  And presumably if our enemy had encountered you, he..."  Giovanna breaks off delicately.  "Well, it sounds like a silly system, anyway."
DiegoValdez says, "Perhaps we should just leave it, but make it appear as if we had been down here ..."
Giovanna paces a few more times around the cave.
Eolo grins. "And yet, perhaps the cleverest thing in this circumstance would be to ignore the whole thing."
Era_Khar'Kov says, "If the wire is loose, I'll tie the rope around it and trigger it from a distance.  I'm guessing its not explosive."
Era_Khar'Kov says, "Of course, I have nothing on which to base that guess."
Giovanna says, "What exactly is it supposed to be protecting?  If it's nothing we care to have, then-- I say let us leave it all alone."
DiegoValdez says, "Then let us be on our way back."
Era_Khar'Kov says (to Giovanna), "There is not point in protecting something with no value.  I suggest we look into it further."
[7thsea] Maxwell says, "Someone ought to at least have a look for a little door or something on the hollow wall."
DiegoValdez says (to Era), "Hmm ... perhaps the trap is designed to imprison nosey intruders."

Giovanna says, "Yes, it might just have been left from spite."
Era_Khar'Kov says (to Diego), "Well, I certainly qualify."
DiegoValdez taps his nose and sniffs.
Era_Khar'Kov asks (of Giovanna), "Well, if I am outvoted, so be it.  In that case, shall we move on?"
[Crows-Nest] Rudiger says, "Wait -- Era does cocaine? I'm really lost now."
[Crows-Nest] Era_Khar'Kov exclaims, "What?!"

Giovanna shrugs.  "I wasn't so much voting as tossing out suggestions."

DiegoValdez says (to Era), "if you wish, we could always tie a thread to it and attach the other end of the thread a little further down ... so that the trap will be triggered earlier."
[Crows-Nest] Era_Khar'Kov asks, "I missed how big the hole is that the wire covers.  Is it door-sized, or smaller?"
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "Slightly funny: A group of adventurers find a trip wire, then stand behind it for several minutes discussing it."
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "Forced to yes, but still."
[Crows-Nest] Eolo says, "the hole is tiny"
[Crows-Nest] Eolo says, "or, sorry"

Giovanna practices some dance steps.
DiegoValdez pulls out a loose thread from his jacket. "long enough to trap the trapper?"

Giovanna turns expertly in the arms of her imaginary escort, and ends with a flourish.  One might suppose that the various stresses have made her a bit giddy.

Giovanna twirls again, then stops abruptly and sits down.

Giovanna says, "This is entirely an unrelated matter, but I think I should mention it: I had a disturbing dream last night, in which -- it was hard to tell, but it seemed as though he was in trouble."

Giovanna adds, under her breath: "Some of them, anyway."
Eolo listens silently.
Giovanna says, "But I seem to remember that there was a large crowd of people in some public place, and shouting, and someone up on a platform."

Maxwell frowns and considers.
Rudiger says (to Diego), "I doubt I saw the highlights of Montaigne cuisine, given how I spent my time."
DiegoValdez says (to Rudiger), "Oh, you must try it sometime."
Rudiger says (to Diego), "I would like to return to both it and Castille some day under happier conditions."
DiegoValdez says, "Well, hopefully Torres and Zepeda will be de-occupied soon."
Rudiger says (to Maxwell), "I can understand your reluctance to hire an unknown mercenary merely on the say-so of two pieces of paper."
Rudiger says (to Maxwell), "I would have no objections to undergoing a probationary period of some kind."
Maxwell says (to Ruediger), "Yes, well, I can at least explain our situation."
Rudiger says, "Please do."
[7thsea] DiegoValdez asks, "Ah, might I recognise the names of the references?"
Maxwell says, "Unknown persons have set us up, so that it appeared we were planning an attack on Montaigne."
Maxwell says, "Sort of a ridiculous idea really, but whoever is behind this arranged for Sieger to discover the fictitious plan."
[7thsea] Ghogg says, "for simplicity's sake, again no"
Rudiger asks, "Sieger?"
Maxwell says, "In some -- confusion, Sieger was initially offered some of the spoils... whirr whirr."
Maxwell says, "And so we are preparing for battle."
Maxwell didn't mention the plan discussed here this morning.
Maxwell says (to Ruediger), "I'll introduce you to our commander of forces, Eva Thornwald."
Rudiger nods.
Maxwell says, "Actually, I and some of my friends here were about to set out, to try to gain some allies."
Rudiger thinks.
Rudiger asks, "The situation sounds interesting, and I have no ties with -- Sieger, was it?"
[7thsea] Ghogg says (to Eolo&Giovanna), "you two can go do whatever it is you were wanting, y'know"
Maxwell smirks. "Right."
[7thsea] Eolo says, "alrighty then."
[7thsea] Giovanna says, "okay"
Rudiger says, "If you have need of my blade, it is yours. If not, I would appreciate any help you could give regarding other postings."
Eolo asks (of Giovanna), "I plan to go speak with the townsfolk a bit and then purchase a shovel before returning back to the forest. did you wish to accompany me?"
Giovanna says (to Eolo), "Yes, I think so."
DiegoValdez says (to Rudiger), "But not with Sieger, of course."
Eolo steps outside the manor and goes to find the local general store.
Giovanna says (to Eolo), "On the way, there is something that I perhaps had best explain to you."
Rudiger says (to Diego), "No. If I am not to take your side in this, I would prefer to stay away from the conflict."
Eolo walks slowly as Giovanna talks.
Maxwell bids the Vodacces farewell before they leave.
Rudiger says (to Eolo_and_Giovanna), "My pleasure meeting you both."
Giovanna says, "I trust you won't repeat any of this to our comrades."
Giovanna has said goodbye to the others.
Ghogg says, "There's a dusty one a couple buildings down from the inn that has a sign up saying 'Herzl's Goods'"

Eolo nods to Rudiger as he leaves.

Eolo says, "of course, m'lady."

Giovanna says (to Eolo), "But it shouldn't surprise you, I think, to know that I have -- ah -- some of the talents common to my station."

Maxwell says (to Ruediger), "Your services would be most welcome."
Eolo says, "I had considered the possibility, of course"
Era_Khar'Kov goes home.
[7thsea] Ghogg says (to Era), "take care"
[7thsea] Ghogg says, "d'oh"
Eolo says, "I am not, mm, as well-acquainted with the details of such as thing as I might be"
Giovanna says, "Half-blood only; rather harmless, on the whole.  Unfortunately."
Giovanna smiles briefly.
Rudiger says (to Maxwell), "Then I am at your service."
Giovanna says, "The details, in my case, mostly consist of being able to discern things that one could probably guess merely by being a keen social observer."
Eolo grins. "As harmless as a panther in kitten's clothing, I fancy."
Giovanna says, "I have not my aunt's degree of skill, for instance -- but that is another matter."
Eolo asks, "do you think this, ah, trait, is responsible for your recent dreams?"
Giovanna says, "In any case, I seem to have acquired, for no reason I can guess, the emnity of a much more powerful fate witch."
Eolo looks surprised.
Giovanna says, "And that is indirectly the cause of my dreams -- she has been meddling with my fate strands."
Maxwell says (to Diego), "If you could finish preparing for the trip, we'll see the commander briefly then."
Giovanna says, "I can't even tell exactly what it is she has done, but it is dangerous.  And frightening."
DiegoValdez says (to Max), "Of course. I will be with you directly."
Eolo asks, "is that, er, harmful to the recipient? or just unsettling?"
Giovanna frowns.
DiegoValdez trots upstairs to throw a few things together.
Giovanna says, "I'm not sure what it is she's trying to do to me, but I had a vision in which-- my enemy -- was pulling up fate cards for me, and they kept coming up Death, over and over again"
DiegoValdez returns shortly.
Eolo winces.
Giovanna looks a little wan.  "So on the whole I don't think she's FOND of me."
Eolo says, "even I can read the message there."
Maxwell looks through the manor, asks Franz, or whatever.
Giovanna says, "Some of them were inverted, but..."  Giovanna shrugs.  "Lowenherz claims to have encountered something like this before.""
DiegoValdez says (to Max), "I'm ready when you are."
Giovanna says, "And whatever it was drove his wife mad and destroyed her."
Eolo says, "ah."
[7thsea] DiegoValdez says (to Giovanna), "better than Legion over and over ..."
Eolo asks, "do you have a planned course of action for dealing with this?"
Giovanna says, "So I am telling you this for two reasons.  First -- I am looking for any other Vodacce in the village, anyone who might be a conduit for this."
Giovanna says, "Or any hint of why I, specifically, am the target of such hatred."
Giovanna says, "And second, I'm warning you.  In case -- my behavior becomes too erratic.  I barely trust myself these days."
[7thsea] Maxwell asks, "I find Eva, right?"
Eolo asks, "do you think the 'conduit' would have to be in this same village?"
[7thsea] Ghogg says, "no"

Giovanna says, "I don't know whether it would be possible to do such powerful work from a great distance."
Giovanna says, "Though-- I have reason to think that my enemy is quite powerful."

Giovanna gets bored and sees no reason not to go into the shop, though she holds her skirt well away from the ground
Eolo walks over and begins testing hafts and so on, talking the while.
Giovanna says, "Nice... selection."
Eolo asks, "heard about that missing child?"
Eolo says, "(to the shopkeeper)"
Ghogg says, "Mm, yes."
Ghogg says, "Terrible, that."
Ghogg asks (of Giovanna), "Looking for something, miss?"
Eolo asks (of Giovanna), "(in Vodacce) he's asking if you want anything -- care for a shovel?"

Eolo says, "some friends and I tracked it to the woods -- apparently it had a lair there"

Giovanna says (to Eolo), "Ah, I think one shovel will be adequate.  But you might ask him whether he carries any Vodacce food."
Giovanna looks surprised.
Eolo says, "the creature that took it, I should say."
Ghogg asks, "Hm, a lair, you say?"

Eolo says, "and, I think, not a natural one."

Eolo says, "yet all the townspeople I have talked to say there has not been a monster around here in ages."

Ghogg says, "There was, used to be at least, in the forest...hm..."
Ghogg says, "Thief that had a hideout, but I thought it was just a room."

Eolo says, "I suppose it could have been expanded"

Ghogg says, "Could try Gregory, he's sort of our local historian."

Ghogg says, "Shack way out on his farm, but he does come in for a drink in town at nights."
Maxwell adds to the letter, 'Be careful and watch him.'
Maxwell signs it and stamps it.
Ghogg says, "You could find his farm if you wanted to talk with him quickly. It's, lessee.."
Maxwell hands it over. "Sorry about that last part, but I hope you can understand..."
Rudiger says, "Certainly."
Rudiger tucks the letter away in a pocket.
DiegoValdez continues waiting with the horses.
Ghogg says, "Ok, this should work: head straight west for about a mile or so, you should come up on a tiny lake."
Eolo nods.
Ghogg says, "That's the southeast corner of his land."
Maxwell says, "Thank you again, and goodbye."
Eolo says, "nice."
Ghogg says, "Dunno where on his land you'll find him, it's about two miles square."
Eolo says, "I could use a little stroll."
Rudiger asks (of Maxwell), "Thank you. Where should I go to find Eva?"
Eolo says, "you've been very kind -- thanks for the assistance."
Giovanna asks (of Shopkeeper), "I don't suppose you carry any Vodacce foodstuffs?  Pasta, perhaps?  A nice mozzarella?"
Eolo hands over some guilders for the shovel, plus a bit extra.
Giovanna adds, "Though I realize you probably don't have any Vodacce customers, but perhaps..."
Ghogg says, "Food? No, I ain't got none of that..."
NewsBoy hollers, "Extra! Extra! mcp has posted message 155 to the bulletin board! This sure beats my day job as Superman!"
Ghogg says, "Mostly non-perishables, cheaper to keep, y'see."
Ghogg says, "If you be like most Vodacce I knew back in the day, you might want a peek at me 'special selection' back here..."
Maxwell says, "Oh, she'll be around later, I think."
Giovanna nods.  "And I don't suppose you've got many compatriots of mine in this area?"
Giovanna asks, "Special selection, mm?"
Maxwell says, "I'll ask Franz if he can find you when she returns."
Ghogg says, "Eh, not for awhile."
Giovanna looks curious.
Rudiger says, "Thanks again."
Ghogg says, "Yah, I keep the stuff 'cause I get an inquiry now 'n then."
Giovanna says, "I wouldn't mind having a little look."
Ghogg goes to a locked cabinet
Giovanna says, "Just out of homesickness, if you see my meaning."
Maxwell goes off and speaks to Franz briefly, then finds Diego and Era.
Ghogg rattles the lock and takes it off with a ley

DiegoValdez says (to Maxwell), "Ah. I was wondering where you'd gone."

Giovanna's eyes light up.

Ghogg says, "Mostly, some monster hunter wantin' to bring down some huge beastie way out yonder, but that's only the passersby."
Giovanna asks, "Anyone else?  When was the last time you had a Vodacce customer?"

Maxwell says (to Diego), "Just seeing to the hiring."
Giovanna looks at the rows of bottles thoughtfully over the shopkeeper's shoulder.
DiegoValdez asks (of Maxwell), "Is senor Nachtmann joining us?"
Ghogg says, "Nope. Last time someone inquired around about this sorta thing was some fellow with a thick beard, maybe a month ago."
Giovanna asks, "What in particular did he want?"
Maxwell asks, "With us? Why would he?"
Ghogg says, "Sedative for animals, he said."
Ghogg says, "Before that...hmm..."
Giovanna looks quickly sideways at Eolo.
Ghogg says, "Been maybe a year, I don't remember much."
DiegoValdez says (to Maxwell), "Oh, I just wondered."
Giovanna asks, "What did he look like?"
Ghogg says, "Memory ain't what it used ta be, sorry."
Ghogg says, "Just remember the heavy beard."
DiegoValdez gets on his high horse.

Ghogg says, "It's green liquid in an equally green bottle. Or maybe it isn't green liquid and the bottle makes it look that way."

Giovanna looks in on Era with something as closely approaching sympathy as she is ever wont to display.
