[nobilis] inky says, "high tech is "earth within the next hundred years or so""

[nobilis] inky says, "which I'm taking to mean "like now, only better""

[nobilis] Jota asks, "Mmm. So any advances that inky expects to see in the next 100 years, aside from just slightly souped up current things?"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "So, anything that currently exists that you can extrapolate to be more efficient/smaller/quicker/stronger/etc."

[nobilis] Jota says, "(Thinking to myself about 1902 tech versus 2002 tech...)"

[nobilis] Jota says (to lps), "Davey probably has a bike that can go from 0-120 in ten seconds, and can deafen small towns in an instant."

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Heh."

[nobilis] Jota says, "So would plain high tech let us carry around, say, Pilot-sized devices that out-process Pentium pros, with built-in snners and tons of RAM and cell modems and stuff like that? (as an example)"

[nobilis] Jota says, "(snners == scanners)"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Built-in sinners."

[nobilis] Ghogg says, "Sin? (Yes/No)"

[nobilis] Jota says, ";I'm sure we can run daemons to handle that."

[nobilis] inky says, "(so, yes, what jota said)"

[nobilis] inky says, "basically, I'm thinking no real new innovation is covered by high tech, just improvement of what's already there -- so 1902 - 2002 type changes would require weird science"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Magic is harder to think about, because there's less to extrapolate from."

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Which is why I'm thinking we'll end up with tech, just because we'll know what it does."

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Although I suppose we could extrapolate from D&D."

[nobilis] inky says, "hee hee"

[nobilis] lpsmith asks (of inky), "Seriously, is there something out there we could extrapolate from for having magical resources?"

[nobilis] Ghogg casts Summon Cthulhu

[nobilis] inky says, "hrm"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Books, legends, fairy tales, other rpgs..."

[nobilis] Ghogg says, "I get the impression Nobilis magic is supposed to be more freeform"

[nobilis] Ghogg says, "like, you won't get 'Wall of Jello' in the D&D manual but a mortal could do it with Nobilis magic"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "I get that impression about the miracles, yes."

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "But I'm trying to get a sense of what 'magical resources' means."

[nobilis] inky says, "I think it covers minor traditional spells from literature -- so you can give luck or curse things, perform wardings against spirits or water-dowsing, make crops grow better -- or, as a fancier thing, summon spirits, make yourself invisible, or turn yourself into a were-creature"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Sorta folk magic, then."

[nobilis] inky says, "yeah, that seems right"

[nobilis] inky says, "if you want a different system of magic that would probably be fine too, assuming it's equivalent power"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Blending into witch magic at the upper levels."

[nobilis] inky says, "right"

[nobilis] lpsmith asks, "So the 'summon spirits'/'invisible' things are the equivalent of 'weird science', and each would cost a point, or is some of that included in the 3 points base magic?"

[nobilis] inky says, "I think those are included in the 3 points base magic, but these are not super-powerful spirits and the invisibility is probably only useful against normal humans or 0-aspect nobilis"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Ah, that could be quite useful."

[nobilis] Ghogg asks, "Er, how many points in magic do you have?"

[nobilis] inky says, "but still, it is conceivably useful to be able to do this -- note that 'spirits' includes 'spirits of the dead', so it's more powerful than just the nobilis ability to switch to the mythic world and talk to the spirits of things"

[nobilis] lpsmith says (to Ghogg), "this is a Realm thing. 3 points."

[nobilis] Ghogg says, "Ok, so you have 'normal magic'"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "I would also presume that, say, 'invisibility' just covered sight, and you'd have to be sure to be quiet."

[nobilis] inky says, "yeah"

[nobilis] inky says, "(hence not working against higher-aspect nobilis, since they have increased senses)"

[nobilis] lpsmith nods.

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "OK, this is sounding powerful enough to be worth 3 points. Maybe even too powerful."

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Maybe a possible limitation on this is that if we want to use the 'spell' (however you want to run that) outside the chancel, we have to have mentioned it previously, in-chancel, to learn it."

[nobilis] inky says, "I think the more powerful spells will need to be developed individually in the same way that new technologies would"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Right, but I was thinking even the lower-power spells."

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "Like, for tech, you'd need to say, "I bring along the defibrullator" and wouldn't just magically have one with you."

[nobilis] inky says, "ok, yes, this makes sense"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "So if, say, we had learned the 'breathe underwater' spell before we left, that might now be useful ;-)"

[nobilis] inky says, "yeah, reasonable enough"

[nobilis] Jota says, "Mmm. That does sound decent."

[nobilis] Jota asks, "Once you learn a piece of magic, do you always know it, or is it a matter of remembering to 'bring it along' each time you leave?"

[nobilis] inky says, "there might be, I dunno, material components and/or words you have to recite"

[nobilis] inky says, "which, theoretically, might have to be read out of a book if you don't have the aspect to memorize them"

[nobilis] lpsmith says, "We're gonna end up with a complete magic system before we're done ;-)"

[nobilis] Jota asks, "Would the short-teleport thing work like a regular spell, in that case? Or would it still be an extra point?"

[nobilis] inky asks, "how short is short?"

[nobilis] lpsmith says (to Jota), "Maybe 'normal' would be line-of-sight, while an extra point would allow you to go through walls, etc."

[nobilis] inky asks, "and how much could be teleported?"

[nobilis] Jota asks, "A dozen yards?"

[nobilis] Jota asks, "The caster and possessions?"

[nobilis] Jota says (to lps), "Hmm."

[nobilis] inky says, "I think -- hrm. I think teleportation of humans is probably outside the realm of folk magic. teleportation of an object that distance is probably kosher"

[nobilis] Jota says, "Mmm. More of a faerie kind of thing than humans, I guess."

[nobilis] inky says, "hmm"

[nobilis] inky says, "well, ok, this is true"

[nobilis] inky says, "ok, I suppose you could research it as a spell"

[nobilis] Jota says, "(This is where I imagine the cartoon leprechauns, always blinking out when you try to grab them, only to appear behind you)"

[nobilis] inky says, "yeah"

[nobilis] buzzard asks, "Would creating clothing on a Nobilis be direct?"

[nobilis] lpsmith says (to buzzard), "A direct way to say, "I'm not interested?" Yes."

[nobilis] Jota says, "Hee."

[nobilis] Emily says, "yay"

[nobilis] inky says, "the book isn't too clear on this, but I think that would be considered a direct miracle"
