Kori spends the first part of the week composing notes of apology to Bronwynn, the last of which she does actually send.
GM says, "I say 'mostly', because one night while Raul is researching in the library, he notices something odd"
[whiz-games] Whizzard says, "So, to make a dragon, you'd just add templates to the base creature until you got what you wanted."
Michel has been persuading an Anchor. They discussed the nature of Anchordom; he contended it was closely analagous to the relationship between artist and Muse, while she claimed it was more similar to a slave-ethics system. Then they had the best sex of her life, but only because he knew it'd piss her off; after which she attempted to kill him with a broken bottle of Cabernet, and threatened to call the police if he ever tried to speak to her again. It was all most satisfactory.
Penny says (to michel), "TMI, man"
Gaston says, "Someone has been busy."
[whiz-games] Whizzard says, "Cool thing is, if you wanted to be weird, you could start with a different critter, like a squirrel."

Raul says, "Alex was kind enough to bankroll me for another trip to Las Vegas"

GM says, "specifically, Raul looks up from the book on ancient and magical maps he is speed-reading to see the shadows flickering on the wall ahead of him"
Michel says (to Penny), "I left out the really nasty details. For example, she criticized Proust's diction."
Penny has been writing her new epic romance, "Love in an French Villa"
GM says, "(he doesn't have to spend *all* his time speed-reading)"
Raul says (to Gaston), "(this was earlier in the week)"
[whiz-games] Whizzard says, "And I think that sort of thing will appeal to all GMs."
Gaston was painting.
Michel says, "*Diction!* Jesus."
Raul says (to Gaston), "(after speed-reading a bunch of books on probability and gambling)"
Gaston was painting slowly and carefully.

Gaston asks (of Kori), "You don't find him much more fascinating than mysterious flickering faces on the walls of the library?"
Michel says (to Kori), "pardon me, m'selle, but I can do enough avoiding for both of us."

Raul says, "I know I'm new to this whole Chancel business, but that seems unusual."

Penny flips a few pages ahead in her notebook before handing it to Raul, along with her pen
Kori is secretly consulting a book on Etiquette For New Nobilis
[whiz-games] Whizzard says, "I could see an animal construction book with a similar setup. You start with a base critter, then add 'mammal', 'large', 'carnivorous', etc. to it."
[Crows-Nest] Michel says (to Kori), "yes, and you're the perfect guide"

Raul sketches the words he saw but didn't recognize, then hands the pad back to Penny.

Penny says, "I'd assume she'll be found when she wants to be"
Raul asks, "Really? 'O no banes please don't block me in here' sort of thing?"
Penny says, "mmhmm"
[Crows-Nest] Gaston exclaims, "Enough role-playing! Want plot!"
(From Kori) A pair of nearby books shifts, and Kori looks through.
Penny says, "youknow what they're like.  easily suggestible"
[nobilis] GM says, "(you can, you recall, mentally contact nobilis, although they don't have to respond)"
Michel wanders in in a cloud of smoke. "Anybody got some serious painkillers?"
Raul says, "Ah, my job is easier than I'd hoped."
Kori asks (perhaps a little wearily), "You were looking for me?"
Raul says, "Indeed. Let me contact Gaston."
Penny says (to Kori), "glad to see that your corner looks onto the garden"
Kori says, "I've been *cough* stuck back here."
Gaston, sensing activity, covers his picture of Ama -- er, Bronwynn, and joins the others.
Raul says, "<Gaston! We're meeting downstairs!>"
Kori pushes out all the books in the bottom row and climbs through.
Gaston asks, "New events afoot?"
Raul says, "Sounds like it."
Michel says (to Kori), "hey, careful with those books"
[nobilis] Penny says, "our banes are really pathetic at confusing us"
Kori has a paperback of "A Hundred Letters of Apology For All Occasions" sticking out of her back pocket.
Raul recaps what he told Penny, and what Penny discovered.
[nobilis] Penny says, "'ooh look, I can make a new path!'"
Kori ignores Michel pointedly.
Gaston asks (of Raul), "Could you draw a picture of the face?"
[whiz-games] Sargent says, "sure"
Kori says (to Raul), "Very odd."

Raul takes Penny's notebook again and sketches below the words.
[whiz-games] Whizzard says, "Less production time, less art and writing cost, etc."
Penny sidles over to Kori, removes the book and drops it discreetly into the piles on the floor before anyone else notices
Michel uses the end of an old cigarette and the beginning of a new one as an excuse to ignore Kori ignoring him
GM says, "(the face looks a bit stylized, like one of those comedy-tragedy masks, although possibly that is just the requirements of the medium)"
[Crows-Nest] Alison wonders if inky should take Penny's #nobilis comments as a challenge.
Kori glances at Penny and looks faintly self-conscious
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "hush"
[Crows-Nest] Raul says, "Good thing the two of you are ignoring each other. If you were paying each other attention no one else would have room to emote."
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "I CAN IGNORE YOU TOO"
Gaston says, "Hm."
Penny looks at the picture.  hmm
Gaston says, "It does not seem like a person. More a representation of -- an emotion, or something."
Michel is highly trained at ignoring students
Penny says, "either the power of theatre has sent us an illusion, or, well, I don't know"
Raul says, "It was damn spooky."
[whiz-games] Jota says, "And lots of pictures of dragons. Which should be cheap, since all fantasy artists like drawing lots and lots of dragons."
Raul says, "Now I know how all of you feel when you turn around and the path's changed."
Michel fades into the background to research lost chancels
Gaston says, "Perhaps we could research these Lost Chancels. Maybe they are some kind of old legend."
Kori says, "I'd also like to know who's asking, come to that."
Penny says (to Kori), "right"
Raul says, "If we could find out about that language I'd feel better as well"
Gaston says, "Or if they are something new, Vona might know about it."
Kori says, "Maybe it's one of those things you're not supposed to pry into."
[Crows-Nest] (from Penny) Kori says, "so I can insult them too!"
Gaston says, "I do not think she would respond well to being summoned for questions, however."
Penny says, "we could ask the landlord"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "HEY"
Penny says, "although I suspect if he knew anything he'd have told us"
Kori says, "Maybe he hasn't seen this yet."
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "(sorry)"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "once again penny attempts to remove the dis from disadvantage vis-a-vis the landlord"
Gaston says, "I wonder also if this has only occurred in our chancel."

GM says (to Michel), "you find, after some work, several references to chancels that have disappeared -- some destroyed, some drained of power and dissipated, some returned to earth -- but only one actually referred to as Lost, and that was many years ago and the details are sketchy"

Penny thinks to see if the Chancel is under threat
Gaston says, "I see Michel has sloped off to research. We should see if he -- ah, he's back."

[interludes] GM says, "I'm going to let them twist on it for a bit"

Michel says (to Penny), "that's not a story fit for ladies"

Kori coughs suddenly
Penny says (to michel), "I can't imagine"
Michel exhales a long plume of smoke
Raul returns to the others, brandishing a book. "Aha and uh-oh, I say."
Penny asks (of Raul), "what is it?"
Gaston says (to Raul), "I sensed danger in the pregnant pause in your page-flipping."
Raul points at the word EXCRUCIAN and a sample of the language on a page.
Penny grabs the book.  "See, I told you it wasn't human..."
Raul says, "No kidding."
Michel turns away from the group and looks up at the ceiling, rocking on his heels slightly
GM says, "(and this is very definitely the sort of page and book where the paper is half-burned and the characters writhe slightly at the edges of your vision)"
Kori asks, "So, um, do we *want* to be receiving Text Messages from the Excrucians?"
Kori asks, "Can we get caller ID?"
[Crows-Nest] (from Raul) Michel says (to the ceiling), "Here, excrucian, excrucian, excrucian."
Gaston says, "At least they are being relatively polite."
Michel asks (of Kori), "Has to be better than talking to them face to face. Don't you think?"

Raul shows Vona the page in Penny's notebook. "While I was researching I saw this face, then this message, then WHERE ARE THE LOST CHANCELS? written in shadow."
Gaston scowls slightly that somebody else managed to discomfit Vona.
Vona takes the page and scans it over. A small smile appears for a moment, then vanishes again.
[Crows-Nest] Penny says (to Gaston), "you just want to comfit her"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says (to Gaston), "I thought you -- DAMMIT"
[Crows-Nest] Raul laughs.
[Crows-Nest] Gaston says, "Hee hee hee."

Michel watches in mild amusement through a splitting  headache

Vona says, "I assume you reproduced this accurately -- in which case, it is very poor penmanship on the author's part"
Vona says, "and I would doubt they are an excrucian at all."
Penny says (to Vona), "oh? that's a relief."
Raul says, "Hm."
Kori asks (of Vona), "Then why would they be using Excrucian script?"
Vona scans the paper one more time, then hands it back.
Gaston says, "The language seems to be known suprisingly widely, at any rate."
Kori asks, "Are they trying to communicate with someone other than us?"
Penny says, "but... what Kori said"
[Crows-Nest] Alison asks, "Execrucians are known for their penmanship?"
[nobilis] Raul says (to Kori), "maybe it's like Latin. All the educated people use it."
Vona says, "an excellent question, which you should fully investigate once you bring me that manuscript"
[nobilis] Michel says, "Latin is for degenerates"
Vona says, "or, rather, deliver it to Shagapir's chancel yourself -- as I said, I will be away for some time starting fairly soon"

[Crows-Nest] Raul laughs and laughs.
Kori mutters, "And not usually even then."
Michel almost kills himself stopping the laughter
Vona steps around behind a tree and is gone.
Kori says, "Rrr."
Penny sniggers at Gaston's sudden look of shock
Gaston says, "I wonder if that was intended as a vote of confidence."
Raul says (to Gaston), "Smoothly done."
Kori turns to the stacks, looking for information on Suetonius and Lucia of Syracuse
Vona's voice floats back, ever-so-slightly "Oh. And do make that map."
[Crows-Nest] Alison says (to Gaston), "Well, you *had* your chance to ask how to get there, and how do you waste it? :)"
Michel says nothing, but pats Gaston on the shoulder in a not entirely serious manner
Penny whispers (to Kori), "looks like she's about as taken in by his sweet-talk as we are"
Raul says, "Huh."
Gaston says, "It is a mystery to me how people seem to misconstrue my innocent remarks. Perhaps I should work on my accent."

[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "It's a good character in the sense of being lots of fun to mock"
GM says, "as the (a) patron saint of writing, she collected a certain amount of books, this one apparently among them"
Kori looks for an indication of the century in which Lucia lived.
Michel looks pointedly at Penny
Gaston researches this Suetonis character.
Penny joins in on the research team
GM says, "unfortunately, only a few hundred years after suetonius, so it's not clear what happened then"

Gaston says (to Kori), "Thank you. This -- [looks at what he's holding] biography of Liberace is probably not relevant, though interesting."
[Crows-Nest] Michel asks, "and remembered it all?"

Penny says (to Gaston), "it might be interesting research material for you anyway"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says (to Michel), "she wouldn't have to remember it all, just one or two relevant facts"
[nobilis] GM says, "(and hence just the sort of book Shagapir would want)"
[nobilis] Raul says, "he puts the 'shag' back in 'suetonius'"

Penny looks up whther any shrines to Lucia of Syracuse claim to have any of her collection

GM says (to Michel), "her collection -- hrm. well, she was martyred at the stake after various other tortures, and possibly her collection was dispersed. there certainly is a small nunnery still in Sicily that claims to have retained most of the books"

Penny says (to Gaston), "ah, sounds like Armande"
GM says (to Penny), "but yes, most shrines claim to have at least something of hers"

Michel says, "Then let's hie ourselves to a nunnery"

Raul says, "Hm."

Kori asks (of Michel), "No, we don't.  Mind if I ask the monks to practice drums in here?"
Raul says, "A collection of books -- sounds like a library to me."
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "this is a flimsy excuse for Gaston to get his nuns"
Penny says, "hmm, why am I suspecting guising ourselves as nuns might be a good idea"
Michel blows smoke in Kori's general direction, while looking straight past her
Gaston asks, "We are abandoning our study of the mysterious message, then?"
Kori says, "I am guessing that your average shrine is not going to preserve a first century manuscript intact."
Raul says, "Though they might be a little surprised by me in my sweats."
Penny says (to Raul), "like I say"
Kori says (to Gaston), "I think we're... taking it under advisement, while we look for other things."
Raul says (to Gaston), "Hopefully this will be quick and we can return to our research"
Penny goes to hunt down a vaguely nun-like robe from the monks
Raul says (to Penny), "mmm, or at least as someone more suited to be in Sicily"
Kori says (to Raul), "Michel can be a mafioso, then."
Penny says, "hmm, maybe tourists.  or historical students"
Michel will go as a mantis in order to sneak into off-limits rooms
Raul concentrates and appears more Italian and more priestly.

Penny says (to Raul), "Kori and I can be your students, oh mentor"
Gaston says, "I was thinking that I could blend in."
Michel becomes small, green and beady-eyed, and clambers onto Raul's shoulder
Raul looks up information about other churches, monasteries, and the like around the nunnery.
Gaston says, "Or possibly guise myself as one of you."
Kori asks (of Gaston), "An artist, seeking the Mediterranean sunlight?"
Raul says (to Gaston), "Two separate groups might not be a bad idea."
Gaston becomes the image of Kori, and says (to Kori), "Something like that."
Michel says, "I certainly intend to go sneaking off as soon as we arrive"
Kori shudders
Kori asks (of Michel), "(sweetly) why don't you go ahead, in fact?"
Penny says, "okay.  I say we head for the nunnery, leaving wilfred and franklin here"
Raul says (to Gaston), "We'll have to call you 'Cori' to tell you two apart."
Gaston says (to Kori), "Goodness, this is an interesting viewpoint on the world."
Gaston says (to Penny), "They can do more research."
Gaston says, "(Assuming it is safe to leave Franklin with Wilfred.)"
Michel says (to Gaston), "turn back before your brain changes too"
Kori says (to Gaston), "You may note that the women look considerably smarter and less gullible now."
Penny says (to Kori), "and if he could only see himself, he'd be so disappointed"
Raul carefully lifts Michel and places him in his shirt pocket for, ah, safe-keeping.
Michel says (to Kori), "ninety per cent of his brain has disappeared. short sentences"
Gaston says (to Penny), "There are several obstacles to that, sadly."
GM says, "having researched the nunnery, you get on the next plane to Sicily"
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "careful not to 'accidentally' squash him"
GM says, "(er, I assume -- unless you'd rather take another exit)"
[Crows-Nest] Raul says, "'mff ffff mff!' 'What's that, Michel? I can't hear you through my shirt pocket.'"
Michel pokes his head over the top of the pocket, and chews on an antenna
Gaston says, "We might as well use the closest library."
Penny says (to GM), "I think plane is easiest"
Gaston says, "It can't be further away from where we want to be than the airport."
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "I'm picturing one of those little cricket cages"
Penny says, "as I would think it'd be more convincing than just walking out of a library"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says (to Raul), "don't make me change back while I'm in there"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "small"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "and locked"
[Crows-Nest] Raul says, "shh, we'll talk about that later."
[Crows-Nest] (from Penny) Kori says, "and thrown in the sea"
Gaston says, "Let us fly, then."
GM says, "ok, flight then"

Gaston doesn't look like Kori any more, by the way.
Gaston exclaims, "I am a generic and inconspicuous tourist!"
Kori throws all the wrappers of her complimentary peanuts over the back of Michel's seat.
Penny listens to very scary music on the flight
[Crows-Nest] Michel isn't actually sure at which point he pissed Kori off, but is highly satisfied with the result
GM says, "the nunnery is in fact kind of out of town (but fairly near a village in the mountains), so it is necessary to take a taxi from the airport and then a begrudging native driver to the village and then walk to the nunnery"
Raul says, "Not *another* Adam Sandler movie."
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "it was hate at first sight, I think"
[Crows-Nest] Gaston says, "I can't believe we're actually going to a nunnery."
[Crows-Nest] Michel says (to Kori), "also, I don't have a seat"
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "I seem to dislike both you french guys"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says (to Michel), "then I cram them into Raul's pocket"
[Crows-Nest] Raul asks, "Hey, who threw these peanut wrappers at my pocket?"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "because praying mantises don't buy plane tickets"

Kori hids the gelato behind her back and pretends not to notice the pistachio-colored dripping at her feet
SisterFlora says, "greetings! you are in luck, then, as today is her ceremonial day"
Raul exclaims, "What luck indeed!"
Penny says (to SisterFlora), "ah, wonderful"
SisterFlora frowns slightly at Kori. "But I regret no food or drink is permitted in the library."
Michel ducks into Raul's pocket in case pets aren't allowed either
Raul says (to SisterFlora), "let me apologize on her behalf. She's somewhat new to such studies of primary references."
[Crows-Nest] Raul says, "and I shall pay for that one later, I'm sure"
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "oh boy yes"
SisterFlora says, "would you like to step inside, out of the sun? I could take you in myself"
Kori glares at Raul, but tosses the remainder of the cone aside.  She is now left with the dilemma of whether to lick her fingers or just wipe them on her shirt.
Gaston says (to Flora), "You are most kind."
Raul says (to SisterFlora), "Thank you, yes."
Penny looks at the church through her sight
SisterFlora leads the way inside, then
Kori goes along inside.
Penny follows, still looking through her sight

Michel pops his head up, looking for any obviously off-limits rooms that he can scuttle into
SisterFlora says, "ah, here we are -- the main collection"
[nobilis] Penny says, "but I actually just want a wacky description of the spirit world version"

Kori brandishes a piece of paper like a fly swatter, looking at the mantis-head of Michel pointedly
Penny flips back to normal sight
SisterFlora says, "not all of Lucia's manuscripts are here, I regret to say, but we are doing our best to gather them from elsewhere"
Gaston asks (of Flora), "Are there any events to mark the ceremonial day?"
Michel champs his mandibles to demonstrate their ability to slice effortlessly through skin
SisterFlora says, "we of course also have volumes of commentary and historical matters, some of which are available for purchase in our gift shop"
Penny asks (of SisterFlora), "which manuscripts do you have here?"
Raul listens to Sister Flora while letting his eyes roam across the volumes.
SisterFlora says (to Gaston), "there was a special service earlier, of course; and as you can see we have many more visitors than usual"
SisterFlora says, "(there are perhaps three other people here besides you)"
Gaston looks at the people carefully.
[nobilis] SisterFlora says, "ah, you wanted to look into the mythic world, you mean -- that's a bit different than the sight"
[nobilis] Penny says, "er, whoops, yes"

Gaston says (to Flora), "Oh, I am sorry I missed that."
Raul murmurs (to Michel), "Why don't you ask the spirit manuscripts if they've seen one by Suetonius?"

[nobilis] SisterFlora says, "the library, like you might expect, is sleeping, with equally dozy shelf-spirits resting against the walls or lounging in the middle of the room playing cards. each one supports a number of tiny sleeping book-spirits"
Penny whispers to Raul, "find a way of asking her about Suetonius's manuscript"
[nobilis] Michel says, "Okay, going spirit vision, talking to manuscripts"
Raul nods to Penny.

GM says, "the manuscripts rustle sadly"
GM says, ""lost, lost, our dead brother," they say"
[nobilis] Kori looks over the manuscripts for any with spirits that seem especially elderly yet retain a slightly depraved look
Raul asks (of SisterFlora), "I've heard that Lucia collected a manuscript by Suetonius. Do you know anything about that one?"
Penny mutters to herself, "far too many things appear to have been lost."
[interludes] GM says, "I was hoping franklin would show up, but no soap, I guess"
Michel asks (of manuscripts), "Looking particuarly wise and eminent today. Uh, thing is, I'm guessing your dead brother's the Suetonius, right?"
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "I'm guessing a nunnery might not be the obvious location for the Suetonius."
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "what with the racy dialogue and all"
Michel says, "Because we're, ah, particuarly interested in that particular text."
SisterFlora thinks. "I -- I admit I don't know the whole collection, but I don't think we have that here. Have you checked the definitive listing of her collection in those books?"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "forget racy dialogue; think more like Tiberius getting blow-jobs in a swimming pool from twelve-year-olds"
[interludes] Lo says, "No worries. Raul is fine."

GM says, ""Many -- pages?""

Gaston wanders off a little to have a look at the nunnery.
GM says (to Raul and Penny), ""Well," Sister Flora says, "You could look through the commentaries here -- I think many of them have definitive listings of all the manuscripts and their locations.""

Michel gets about as visibly angry as a mantis can. "If they burnt it... destroyed a goddamn priceless manuscript..."
Michel asks (of books), "Who took him?"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says, "I am picturing a little *red* mantis"
Penny thanks Sister Flora, and goes to speed-read a couple of the commentaries
Raul says (to SisterFlora), "I'll have to do that. Thanks."
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "I am picturing Gaston peeking through doors to find the showers"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "my antennae are flicking around very quickly"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says (to Michel), "so are Gaston's"

GM says, "between the book-spirits and the commentaries, you eventually conclude that the manuscript was taken away sometime in the 1200s by soldiers at a point when the collection was being "redistributed", and at least supposedly put to the torch"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "well, lots of green goop"
[Crows-Nest] Kori . o O ( but, hmm, if you resize a mantis to be invisibly small... )
Penny says, "hmm, I suspect more research into where 'redistributed' books end up might be helpful"
Gaston sketches the courtyard as it appears in the mythic world.
GM says, "however, some nuns salvaged what they could of the manuscripts, and brought them along with Lucia's finger-bone to another shrine elsewhere in Sicily"
Raul says (to Sister Flora), "You have a wonderful collection. It's amazing how many manuscripts you've been able to get."
Michel says, "yeah, I think we need to go and look at a comprehensive listing of medieval manuscripts somewhere"
Michel says, "timing"
Penny says, "hmmmmm"

Penny has packed earplugs this time, so Michel and Kori's bickering does not disturb her
Michel returns to Raul's pocket

Raul says (to Kori and Penny), "Are you done with your studies for today? We should be going soon."
Kori says (to Raul), "Yes, just about"
Penny says (to Raul), "I think we've learned enough"

Kori puts down a manuscript with fanciful illuminations
Raul says (to Sister Flora), "Thanks again for your help and patience."
Gaston says (to Penny), "That will not be necessary."
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "as long as grabbing doesn't involve actually touching him"
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "right"
[interludes] Lo asks, "about ready, or should I come back in five minutes or so?"
[interludes] GM says, "I dunno, prodding rob -- sorry, I don't know what he's doing now"
Penny says, "I suggest we go to the next shrine on our itinerary"

Raul leans forward towards Sister Frances and murmurs, "Frenchman."
Michel looks hurt at being described as a student
SisterFrances says, "ah, Lucia, of course -- I regret we don't have much of a collection of her literature, but we do have her left finger-bone on display"
SisterFrances says, "inside the chapel, there, and off to the left"
[Crows-Nest] Kori says (to Michel), "what? go back to being a mantis and you won't have these problems"

SisterFrances says, "her manuscripts? yes, a very few -- plus, for safekeeping, we hold some of the fragments salvaged from an attempt to burn the impious parts of her collection"

GM says, "Sister Frances thinks for a moment. "Well, it's a bit off-limits, but I did let that nice archaeologist see, so I can hardly do less for you.""

Michel says (to Kori), "I smell something suspicious. And not just Gaston."
GM says, "and she walks you to a side-door, unlocks it with a key from pocket, and lets you in"

Penny follows Sister Frances, but glances at her in the mythic world
[Crows-Nest] Michel asks, "ARCHAEOLOGIST?"
Raul stays with Sister Frances. "Archaeologist? I'm surprised one would be interested in a collection of books."
Kori says (to Michel), "I am desolated to agree with you."
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "hush, I will ask in time"
Michel nods. "It's usually the way."
GM says, "(sister frances looks normal in the mythic world, and to the sight. well, as normal as anything looks in the mythic world)"
Penny carefully looks through the manuscripts
[Crows-Nest] Raul says, "we could ask her wimple spirit about the archaeologist"
[Crows-Nest] DavidW says, "I think she'd notice that."
[nobilis] Michel asks, "Is there any way we can sniff after this golden glowy thing?"
GM says, ""An archaeologist, yes, I think that's what he said. Or an explorer? He was certainly very interested in the documents, and he had some paperwork from the university explaining he was doing research and requesting he be allowed to examine them. An American, too.""

GM says (to Penny), "the manuscripts blink up at you. eventually, one gestures towards a very old and burnt manuscript, silent in the corner."
Penny goes to look at the manuscript
Gaston says, "This divination has not provided all the answers I was hoping for. Essentially none, in fact."
Gaston says, "I had not thought that a demigod would get god envy so quickly."
GM says, "outside the mythic world, it is almost completely ash"
[nobilis] Franklin says, "seems like it'd take a couple of hours to get there"

Penny asks (of manuscript), "are you the last manuscript of suetonius?"

Gaston. o O ( I could disguise myself as a manuscript, allowing you to steal the original. We could later replace it with a forgery. )

Michel goes into the library, picks up the manuscript, makes a ghost miracle of his hand being empty and walks out
Penny says (to michel), "wait, it's ashes"
[nobilis] GM says, "(a ghost miracle isn't going to do it, I think, unless she's distracted. also, yes, it's in pieces)"
[nobilis] Michel says, "or an illusion, or whatever... okay, I wait"
[nobilis] GM says (to Raul), "it'd be a level-4 creation, I think"
Penny says, "unless you've got a dustpan and brush"
Penny says, "let's just wait for franklin"
[nobilis] Michel asks, "wait. what exactly *can* a ghost miracle do if not illusions?"
[nobilis] GM says, "right, but they're not really good illusions"

Michel looks at Gaston with extreme contempt
Gaston says, "Penny should have some paper to burn in her notebook."
[nobilis] Franklin says, "Okay"
[nobilis] Franklin coordinates this with Raul and so forth.
Raul says, "<I'm meeting Franklin at the nearest library. Be back in twenty minutes.>"
[nobilis] Raul says, "Fwoosh goes a DMP, and off I travel."
Penny says, "I say we wait.  let's see if franklin can help us out first"
Michel . o O ( Fix it before we steal it. Excellent idea. )
GM says, "eventually Franklin arrives, further startling Sister Frances"
Franklin is wearing a shockingly vivid golf outfit.
GM says, "but she is of course polite to someone so old"
[Crows-Nest] Raul exclaims, "Ha!"
[Crows-Nest] Gaston says, "Yay outfit."
GM says, "too polite to comment on his outfit"
Franklin says, "I came as fast as I could. Hello, hello."
[nobilis] Michel says, "ah, okay, I'll jack it up to a proper illusion, then."
GM says, "but you can hear her thinking "American.""
[nobilis] GM says, "ok, so a creation of emptiness, then, I guess"
Penny says (to SisterFrances), "I called him on my mobile phone.  I would like to ask him some questions, if he can look at the manuscripts with me"
[nobilis] Michel says, "mrm, one second"
Franklin says, "Ooh, there is some very old paper here."
Franklin sniffs in deeply.
GM looks at Franklin a bit skeptically, unsure what a man with slacks like that could know about manuscripts, but lets you in all the same
Penny whispers (to Franklin) "don't inhale the ashes"
[nobilis] Raul says, "Do not inhale the manuscript please"
GM says, "(er, Sister Frances does, that is)"
[nobilis] Penny says, "HAHA timing"
Franklin says, "Tut-tut."
Penny says (to Franklin), "I was wondering if there is anyway you could repair _this_ manuscript"
Gaston asks, "Er, is Sister Frances still watching you?"
Raul says (to Sister Frances), "I've been assured that Mister Merriman knows much about paper."
GM says, "(yes, she is)"
Penny says (to Gaston), "well, I am thinking it at him.  picky picky"
Franklin says, "I can certainly try..."
GM says, "(allured yet repelled by his outfit)"
Raul asks (of Sister Frances), "Anyway, do you remember what university the archaeologist was from?"
Raul smiles winningly at Sister Frances.
SisterFrances looks a bit flustered by the attention.
SisterFrances says, "um .. ah .."
Raul says, "I know it must be hard to concentrate over Mister Merriman's outfit."
Penny asks (of Franklin), "(loudly, and coincidentally blocking Frances's view of the manuscript) I was wondering how old you think this document was?"
[nobilis] Franklin says, "ok so"
[nobilis] Gaston says, "Smoothly done."
SisterFrances says, "the university of naples, I believe the papers said -- they were quite in order, I checked them myself"
[nobilis] Penny asks, "preservation?"
[Crows-Nest] (from Michel) Franklin says, "Well, it looks brand new to *me*."
[nobilis] Penny asks, "creation?"
Franklin concentrates.
Raul says (to Sister Frances), "Sure, sure. I wasn't doubting you."
Raul smiles again.
[nobilis] SisterFrances says, "hrm, I guess it's level-4 creation again"
Raul says, "I was just curious -- I hadn't heard of anyone digging around here."
[nobilis] Penny says, "woo, free to franklin"
(From Franklin) The paper begins to make sparkly noises.
Gaston sketches Raul and Frances, for later amusement value.
SisterFrances says, "oh, no, he wasn't the digging sort of archaeologist -- or, rather, he was telling me stories of jungle exploration and things"
SisterFrances says, "he seemed very adventuresome"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "and as it appears... it disappears again"
Michel asks (of Frances), "Can we smoke in here?"
Raul says, "Jungles? Maybe being American he didn't realize how few jungles there are around Sicily."
Franklin says, "*cough* *ahemm hrrmm* *cough* <rustle>"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "er, #nobilis"
SisterFrances says (to Michel), "in the courtyard, please"
Penny says (again loudly, to cover the noises), "It seems to be an interesting piece, no?"
[nobilis] Raul says, "it is the Penny and Raul distraction show"
SisterFrances titters at Raul's remark. "Oh, yes. He said after this he was off to greece to look at boats there."
Franklin says, "Yes, fascinating. I nearly bought something like this in 1968, but it turned out to be a forgery."
[nobilis] Gaston says (to Raul), "You're in."
[nobilis] Penny says, "also, I assume she thinks franklin is deaf, what with my yelling"
[nobilis] (from SisterFrances) Gaston says "Take it from a pro!"
[nobilis] Gaston says, "Ha."
[Crows-Nest] Michel asks, "Is it done?"

[nobilis] Franklin asks, "does it reappear yet?"
Raul says, "First jungles, then manuscripts, then boats! Maybe he watches too many of those American movies."
[nobilis] Penny asks, "Sister Frances is a prostitute?"

[nobilis] Raul exclaims (at GM), "ha!"
Penny reads the manuscript hastily
SisterFrances says, "oh goodness yes -- I'm very fond of the sound of music, myself"
Franklin beams to himself.
[nobilis] SisterFrances says, "(it looks like the right thing, certainly)"

[nobilis] Michel says, "okay, I pick it up, create an illusion of emptiness in my hand, and walk out under pretence of going for a smoke"

Penny follows Michel out, smiling politely in a manner intended to imply she also needs to smoke
[nobilis] Franklin says, "a copy of burned old ashes? hmm"
SisterFrances says, "well, we generally spend a few months out here before switching -- it gets a bit lonely, sometimes, -- except for today, of course, tee hee"
[nobilis] Gaston says, "Oops, right."
[nobilis] Gaston says, "Sod it."
[nobilis] Franklin says, "one supposes... maybe..."
Penny gets to the courtyard, takes the manuscript from michel
Gaston . o O ( Penny, Michel? Could you burn a page or something and make us a nice bunch of ashes? )
Michel says (to Penny), "oi"
Michel says, "you're going to have to read over my shoulder"
[nobilis] Franklin says, "it's just acutely carbonized paper at some level..."
Penny also takes a pageout of her notebook and hands it to michel
Raul smiles again.

Penny says (to Michel), "you'll need to take it back in.  she'll notice me with ash in my hands"
Franklin . o O ( I could whip up something more accurate than lined notebook paper. )

Penny says (to franklin), "unlined, thank you"
Michel says (to Penny), "on second thought, I actually need a smoke quite badly. You read the bloody thing"
[Crows-Nest] Alison says, "(One wonders if it might have been easier just to create a *copy* of the original manuscript, rather than changing the ashes themselves...)"
Michel says, "wait, we're taking it back? Vona wants it"
[nobilis] SisterFrances says, "hee hee"
Penny says (to michel), "no, burn this page, take them in, put them where the manuscript was"
Penny mutters, "stupid man"
[nobilis] Gaston says, "I assume Powers and especially Imperators won't be fooled by a copy."

Raul says (to Sister Frances), "I've been guiding students for a while, but hopefully I'll be done with that shortly."

Michel asks (of Penny), "and she won't notice the blue lining and wide margins?"
Raul says, "It's not been bad, but I would like to deal with more than passing tourists."
SisterFrances says, "oh, goodness, yes"
Penny says (to michel), "my notebook paper is blank.  sheesh.  also, it's ashes"
Raul says, "I expect you know what that's like."
SisterFrances says, "oh, yes"
Penny asks, "burn the damned thing, will you?"
SisterFrances says, "I've often thought about moving back to some other place"
[Crows-Nest] Alison says, "On the other hand, the other ashes might tell her what you did."
Michel says, "as Franklin will tell you, paper ain't all the same. similarly, ashes. but if you insist..."
SisterFrances says, "perhaps a little nunnery out in the country with cats"
Raul nods encouragingly.
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "hush"
Michel says, "and presumably some fragments of it were still intact"
Gaston prepares to make the fingerbone start bleeding blood or something, if that'll distract the nun long enough for Michel and Penny to get their act together.
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "I don't think she'll notice the difference, being an imperator"
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "er, not being"
Penny says (to Michel), "look, it's a stopgap.  maybe we can blame the archaelogist"
Michel lights notepaper, crumbles it up a bit, makes it invisible, walks back in
SisterFrances asks, "ah, back to look at the collection some more?"
[nobilis] Franklin says, "I think if it was your sacred duty to tend for a certain pile of ashes your whole life, an imitation on burned notebook paper wouldn't begin to fool you"
Michel asks (of Frances), "how could I keep away?"
[nobilis] Penny says, "well, she's more interested in the finger"
Michel says (to Franklin), "*cough* okay, make these look like the real thing"
[nobilis] Penny says, "and this was in a a corner, not in plain sight"
Franklin does some extra paper trickery to try to make it look more like the real thing.
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "y'all are obsessing on this too much, but whatever"
[nobilis] GM says, "(ok, I dunno, I guess you make it work somehow)"
Raul sighs to Sister Frances. "Frenchmen, Americans, and most of them smokers."
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "we're being meticulous"
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "I suggest we get this where it needs to go"
[Crows-Nest] Raul says, "I'm just happy to be doing my part, chatting up the nun. Next time this is Gaston's duty."
[Crows-Nest] Penny says (to Raul), "that wouldn't be safe"
[Crows-Nest] Gaston says (to Raul), "If you insist. I was most impressed."
SisterFrances says, "goodness yes .. so many Italians, too"
Franklin mutters to himself, "This is awful. I have spent my whole life despising forgers and manuscript thieves."
Raul asks, "The Italians at least I understand, eh?"
Gaston thinks (to Franklin), "But we *repaired* the manuscript."
SisterFrances says, "tee hee .. it seems like you understand them so well"
Kori manages to look as austere and distant as Nobly possible, and also not particularly of any nationality.
Franklin will be privately troubled about this for a while.
Penny hides the manuscript in her bag, and wanders back inside nonchalantly
Franklin turns around. "Well, I've seen what I came to see. Thank you, thank you."
Raul shrugs self-deprecatingly. "I've had to learn."
Penny says (to SisterFrances), "this is a very beautiful building"
SisterFrances nods vaguely at Franklin and Penny, her attention still captivated by Raul.
Michel wanders out again, and has a smoke for real this time
Raul asks, "Oh, you're done with your studies?"
Penny says (to Raul), "yes, and I simply must meet my sister in an hour, so we should head off soon"
Raul sighs.
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "if I don't drag him away, he'll never leave"
Franklin shuffles out.
Raul says (to Sister Frances), "I have to go. But I'll try to find more students interested in Lucia of Syracuse so I can return soon."
Penny drifts outside
SisterFrances exclaims, "oh yes .. do come again!"
Gaston sighs, and gives his sketch of Raul and Frances to the nun.
SisterFrances exclaims, "ooh!"
Raul says (to Gaston), "Oh, that's quite good."
Kori heads outside.
SisterFrances says, "thank you ever so much -- I will hang this up by my bed"
Franklin starts thinking he should set up a paper-restoration business.

Raul relaxes some as they leave the shrine. "So that's the right manuscript?"
Gaston says, "I'm interested in seeing this other chancel, I admit."
Penny says (to Raul), "can you find a way to the Chancel of Shagapir"
Penny says, "this appears to be the right manuscript, yes"
Raul says, "I hope so -- if my mom had seen me chatting up a nun, I'd never have heard the end of it."
[interludes] Franklin asks, "do I tell the others about meeting Lo or is that my own business?"
Raul says (to Penny), "Oh, right, of course."

Alison grabs Franklin's arm, to start pulling him towards it. "It's over here -- c'mon!"

Kori looks at Penny with a gaze that would evaporate solid steel.

Alison wiggles her fingers, making faces and pointing at the manuscript.

Franklin says, "Just as well, I need to change before I meet somebody at the Library of Congress in a little while."
Alison gives it over, with a serious expression. "And *be* *careful* with it. That's what they told me." She nods solemnly to herself.
Penny asks (of Raul), "hey, um, point us towards an exit that leads home?"
Tyoka reads, doubles over coughing.

Michel asks, "Seems easy enough to get there. Do you mind if I accompany you?"
Franklin says, "By all means."
Raul says, "I'd like to, too. I'll just need a minute to change."

Raul says, "Oh, and Vona's interested in us making that self-updating map of the chancel. I've got some ideas on where to start."

Franklin says, "For all I know, all of these events are somehow linked in ways we haven't discovered yet..."
Gaston says, "This Lo might not be expecting a large group of people."

Lo says (to Franklin), "Well, I don't know how much a sense you have gotten yet of the various chancels tending towards the destruction of each other."

[nobilis] GM says, "and, incidentally, you get a dynasty point every session -- as you recall, dynasty points are both a pool of general miracle points (not refreshed, but anyone of you can draw on it), and if you have 25 of them you can trade them in for an imperator point"

Raul says, "And before either there was a face."
Lo says, "Well, as I say, if it was destroyed, I would not be here. But yet I have not heard of this happening. Describe the face."

Lo bows courteously to Penny.
Penny flips to the page with the drawing and hands it to Lo.
Lo nods and studies it.
Lo shifts the staff to under his arm and closes his eyes as if meditating.

[Crows-Nest] Penny asks, "man, it is a good thing I carry that notebook with me, isn't it?"

Lo asks, "Well, who spins shadows?"

Michel says (to Franklin), "it means he got his syllables mixed up"
Penny asks, "the power of shadows? or spinning?"
[Crows-Nest] Franklin says, "yay!"
Lo says, "Shadows."
Michel says, "Too many possible interpretations."
Penny says, "Hmm.  So, the power of shadows.  that explains the shadow-writing"
Lo says, "There is a fellow, somewhat older than I, named Jack. I believe you met him at the party."
Franklin says, "Brr. Sudden chill."
[Crows-Nest] GM says (to Michel), "it's 5/7/5 in japanese"
[Crows-Nest] Michel says, "ha"
Penny says, "I did not attend the party"
Michel says, "nor I"
Franklin asks, "Is he the one that shut the party down at the end?"
Lo says, "Indeed."
Lo steeples his hands.
Franklin says, "Hrrm."
Raul says, "Aha, him."
Lo says, "I have only heard of this happening once before, far before my time. I know no dtails."
Franklin says, "This is all leading somewhere creepy, if you ask me."
Michel asks, "Mm, yes. This doesn't tell us that much, does it?"
Lo radiates a little Serenity to calm everyone down
[Crows-Nest] Penny says, "egads, it's late"
Franklin says, "Still, it's a nice day today."
[Crows-Nest] Penny is glad this session is being cut short, at this rate
[Crows-Nest] Franklin says, "yeah"
[Crows-Nest] Franklin asks, "how are we supposed to end this?"
Raul asks, "Do you know where we might look for details?"
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "you can say thanks for the info and go back to the chancel, I guess. or invite him back to meet the monks"
Lo says, "I contemplated the answer to the question, and that is what Philosophy told me. Unfortunately Philosophy has difficulty articulating questions on a cosmic scale."
[Crows-Nest] Alison says, "By kicking the staff out from under him."
[Crows-Nest] Alison says, "And then running away while he's trying to get up."
Franklin asks, "I assume you'll stay in contact with us? Or do you want to come to our chancel, since you've misplaced yours?"
Raul says, "Our chancel does have monks."
Penny says (to Lo), "hmm.  it occurs to me that you might want to come and discuss this with the inhabitants of our chancel"
Michel says (to Lo), "I thought the cosmic scale was rather the point"
Lo says, "Indeed. That is another reason I contacted you."
Franklin says, "Well, let's not dawdle around here all day."
Lo says (to Michel), "Philosophy has trivial questions, like 'What is the meaning of life?' without many realizing they are trivial."
Penny asks (of Lo), "will you accompany us, then?"
Raul says, "We can reach our chancel this way, past the microfiche reader."
Lo nods.
Franklin follows Raul.

GM says, "and let's end it here"
Michel spins on his heel and heads home
GM says, "next week, action."

Franklin says, "2 weeks"
