Sargent: Raul Miera, Marquis of Paths

His parents saw America as the land of opportunity. They snuck across the border from Mexico to the US, eventually stopping in New Mexico. His father opened a restaurant, while his mother cleaned houses. Raul was born a few years after they made it to the US, a citizen by birth.

That was good enough for the Army, who handed him a low lottery number and shipped him off to Vietnam. No berths in the Reserves for him, no deferments for a painter of houses and sometime-cook in his father's restaurant. His sergeant discovered Raul had a knack for threading the platoon through minefields. Raul didn't much like the job, but bowed to necessity.

He never heard the mine that took his legs. When he finally woke up in the MASH unit, both of his legs ended mid-shin. Raul returned to New Mexico, but his days of hiking through its severe landscape were over. So too was his house-painting job. Cooking, though, he could do even from his wheelchair.

Thank goodness his Imperator gave him those boots.
