Gregory Hayden

An old, forgotten soldier.  Used to fight in the mobile infantry for
UNACE, but mustered out long ago after losing a leg.  Used up all his
medical benefits getting it replaced, and then lost his pension when
hackers blacked out a whole section of UNACE records.  Now there's no
proof that he ever fought for them, and they won't pay him.

He spent a while supporting himself as a merc, but he'd had enough of
the danger and too many of his employers were in dubious businesses.
For the last 20 years he's worked as a drifter, an odd-job labourer.
He keeps his old rifle nicely polished, but fortunately he hasn't had
to use it much recently.

He makes just enough to keep himself fed and in liquor, and one of his
few joys is telling his old war stories.  This has made him fairly
popular among the younger crews, despite his lack of charm.  His other
main joy is a Rigellian monkey lizard named Glerk that he picked up on
campaign.  He expected the thing to pack it in after a year or two, but
it's nearly as old as he is now and still as frisky as when he got it.
Every year or so it spends a few days eating three times its weight,
and then changes colours.  Right now it just finished changing to
bright yellow, which makes Gregory very happy because before that it
was dull grey and he was afraid it was finally dying.
