Emvee pushes a wheeled hard-side suitcase along in front of him.
Thaddeus asks, "Ah, there you are. You guys are the security experts, right?"
Thaddeus is an orc, normal height (for an orc), dressed street-smart but normally.
Thaddeus says, "Call me Thad, I'm the driver today."
Asher says, "howdy"
Sunny says, "Hi Thad! Yeah, we're here to help out."
Thaddeus says, "If you all will jump in this van, we'll go pick up the truck."
Sunny adjusts her cute-but-functional backpack and duffel bag.
Thaddeus climbs into the van and runs a lead from the dashboard into the jack in his skull.
Emvee climbs in.
Sunny jumps in back and stows her gear.
TonyThum dons his shades.
Asher finds a seat.
TonyThum stows the gear and takes a seat.
Thaddeus says, "Okay, we're driving out to Salish territory first, the van is waiting there."
Thaddeus asks, "It'll make crossing a bit easier, since it's just a bunch of friends, out for a day trip, right?"
Thaddeus says, "I've already given the guards their bung, everything should be cool."
Thaddeus says, "Once we get to the truck, I'll fill in the rest."
Sunny says, "As long as they're slick with my...hiking gear."
Thaddeus drives for a while, then slows down at the crossing.
Brave asks, "So, what do we have here, Thad?"
Thaddeus asks (of Brave), "Oh, just me and my buddies on a day trip. How's the weather?"
[Crows-Nest] TonyThum says, "mmm... lowrider vans"
Brave asks, "It'll do. You, dwarf, in the back, where are you all going?"
Emvee says, "Some hikin' place Thad knows."
Brave looks at Thaddeus, nods. "All right, on your way."
Thaddeus drives on.
Thaddeus says, "I hope they're all that easy."
Thaddeus says, "We're gonna head east through Salish lands for a while, then turn south until we reach the Ute Nation."
Sunny exclaims, "Okay!"
Sunny leans back and naps some.
Thaddeus says, "We'll keep going south a bit before we head west again and enter California Free State."
[Crows-Nest] TonyThum says, "this reminds me of the Indy 3 game. I think you have to sell a fine leather jacket to the next guy"
Thaddeus says, "The Salish-Ute border is pretty lightly patrolled, but we'll want to be careful on the corssing into Cali."
Thaddeus says, "And here's the truck."
TonyThum asks, "so in case they ask again, what's the story on where we're going?"
[Crows-Nest] Asher says, "they're probably worried we're carrying in fruit or vegetables to california"
Thaddeus says, "I got room up front for four of ya, but my brother trog'll have to sit in the back."
[Crows-Nest] Sunny says, "they've had magic bean problems"
Thaddeus says (to Thurgun), "Sorry about that, but there's a light and a nice seat."
Thaddeus says (to Tony), "As you see, we've painted the van with the logos for Hertz Moving."
Thaddeus says, "So we're just a bunch of buddies moving a pal's stuff to his new home in Cali."
Thaddeus says, "You guys can argue as to who actually is moving."
Sunny says, "Asher seems like the moving type"
TonyThum says, "Well, since someone is already sitting with the stuff" (but not very loudly)
[shadowrun] GM says, "I was hoping someone would ask why we're not just heading straight down the coast"
Asher asks, "sure, say I'm going to cali -- so why not direct?"
Asher says, "this is kind of a detour"

[shadowrun] Emvee says, "Because we're carting highly illegal goods that we don't want on a well-patrolled highway, was my assumption."

Thaddeus says, "This is as direct as you can get. The straight route takes you through Tir Tairngire."
Thaddeus says, "If they don't want you there, you wake up a day later just over the border with a migraine and total amnesia."
Asher says, "whoops"
Thaddeus says, "It ain't worth it, so we'll give them a wide margin."
Emvee furrows his brow. He's not well-versed on extra-Seattle geography.
Asher says, "yeah, guess that's the kind of thing to skip"
TonyThum whispers to Emvee, "The elven nation"
Thaddeus says, "Most commercial traffic takes a boat these days, which is why we're trying to look non-commercial"
Thaddeus says, "But we've got a few extras to help."
Thaddeus opens up the back door. The back is full of boxes, but near the back is a large cannon, and a small helicopter.
Sunny's eyes light up.
Thaddeus says, "Once we're in Ute territory, I'll strap on the big gun. And if we need, I can get the drone up in about a minute."
TonyThum raises an eyebrow
Asher says, "sweet"
Sunny asks, "How much trouble are you expecting?"
Emvee asks, "Do we drop th'movin' story then?"
Thaddeus says, "So hop up there, big guy, and let's get going."
Thaddeus says (to Sunny), "Used to be, the Ute took a piece of the action and there were no problems."
Thaddeus says, "They stopped playing along recently. I think they're just negotiating for a bit more."
Thaddeus says, "So they're not gonna want to really do anything to us, kill the golden egg for them, but we should look ready."
Thaddeus says (to Emvee), "Ute territory's kinda lawless. We won't look that outta place."
Thaddeus asks, "You all ready to roll out?"
Sunny asks, "So we can break out our discouragement gear?"
Thaddeus says, "We'll want to be careful at the border crossings, but having it out is fine between."
Asher says, "let's do it"
Emvee angles for a window seat.
Thaddeus swings up into the cab, jacks in again, and the engine starts.
Sunny pulls on her secure jacket and unzips her duffel for ready access to larger weapons.
TonyThum inconspicously sits next to Sunny
[Crows-Nest] Asher says, "woo woo"
[Crows-Nest] Sunny says, "nah, he just wants ready access to the grenades in the duffel"
[Crows-Nest] TonyThum says, "hee"
Thaddeus starts off. "I've been driving this route oh, four-five years now. Never much trouble, but it always helps to have some help along."
[Crows-Nest] Emvee says (to Sunny), "No, no, he just wants ready access to her 'grenades' in her 'duffel'."
[Crows-Nest] Sunny says, "aie"
Thaddeus says, "Why, once..." and launches into a long and improbably story about a truck full of guided missiles, an attack by a wyvern, and a blond Amerind princess who fell in love with him.
Asher asks, "you usually have somebody else along, or just at contract-renewal time?"
[Crows-Nest] Asher says, "hee hee"
Thaddeus says (to Asher), "I usually like to have a guy or two along. I usually don't bring this many if things are quiet, I'll admit."
[Crows-Nest] TonyThum says, "No, I don't want to ask her about her grenades"
Sunny says, "Hm."
Sunny says, "Well, it's nice to get out and get some fresh air every once in a while."
Thaddeus says, "Been rainier than usual out here. Glad it cleared up today."
Thaddeus says, "Okay, everybody hold on, this stretch is a bit bumpy."
Thaddeus asks, "Them Salish, don't really go in for road repair, y'know?"
GM says, "Time passes, Thaddeus keeps driving. You pass over the Columbia river and turn south."
Sunny eventually gets bored of watching nature and starts reading.
Thaddeus exclaims, "What hey!"
Thaddeus slams on the brakes.
Asher looks up from his movie.
Sunny starts.
GM says, "Up ahead, there's a sign that says "Salmon River"."
GM says, "The road goes up to the edge of a drop, maybe 20 meters, and stops."
GM says, "Looks like it starts up again on the other side."
Thaddeus says, "Looks like the rains made the river flood. Musta washed out the bridge."
Sunny asks, "This is new?"
Sunny says, "Aha."
Asher says, "whoops"
Emvee asks, "'s there anoth' one?"
Thaddeus says, "I've been driving this way for years, never seen that bridge missing."

Thaddeus projects a map up on the windsheild.

Thaddeus asks, "Anybody got any ideas?"
Emvee says, "'f we go west, we hit elves, so I guess we gotta go east."
Sunny asks, "How bad is east?"
Thaddeus says, "It gets pretty hilly."
Thaddeus says, "The big problem is if we go east we'll have trouble finding the road again."
Emvee says, "'less this truck c'n go in th'water..."
Emvee asks (of Thad), "Ev'n if we follow th'river?"
Thaddeus says (to Emvee), "Can't afford the flotation tanks, sadly."
Thaddeus says, "This truck'll do some cross-country, but it's not really built for it."
Thaddeus says, "But if nobody's got a better plan, I guess we can try it."
[shadowrun] Emvee asks, "I take it it's a deep, broad, choppy river?"
[shadowrun] TonyThum says, "would it make sense to send the drone out to scout for"
[shadowrun] TonyThum says, "a) a bridge"
[shadowrun] TonyThum asks, "b) an ambush?"
[shadowrun] Sunny says, "ooh, that's a good idea"
[shadowrun] Sunny says, "why don't you suggest it"

TonyThum asks (of Thaddeus), "well, can you send out your drone to check for a different route -- maybe even an ambush?"

[shadowrun] GM says (to Emvee), "it's broad but fairly smooth"
[shadowrun] GM says, "but it's in a bit of a cut, the level's gone back down a bit"
Thaddeus says, "Okay, let's do that."
Thaddeus squints, and the back doors pop open. You can hear the drone sliding out, and then the rotors start up.
Asher says, "I guess in theory we could try and get a temporary bridge together, but I wouldn't know enough to do it"
Asher says, "but maybe some explosives to drop some of the banks"
Drone-1A flies up and starts to circle.
[Crows-Nest] TonyThum says, "uh oh. "1A""
Drone-1A crosses the river and flies around.
Thaddeus says, "Nothing but us shows in thermo on both sides of the river."
Sunny says, "I'd be afraid that'd start the whole bank sliding in, even if I had some explosives with me."
Thaddeus says, "I'll send it off east to check for a bridge. Let me put it up on the screen."
Drone-1A flies off east. The monitor shows the riverbanks sliding past, looking more or less the same.
Emvee asks (of Asher), "Big trees?"
Drone-1A shows the river entering into the cut from a flatter area, the river is about 50 meters wide there (as opposed to 40 m where tre bridge was), but it's at ground level.
Emvee looks around at the local foliage.
Sunny says, "I guess we could try a raft or something if we had to."
[shadowrun] Sunny says, "everything I know about nature I learned from watching vid shows"
Drone-1A keeps flying over the river. Finally, about 15 km away, there's a rail bridge.
[shadowrun] Asher asks, "nobody here has any relevant engineering skills, do they?"
[shadowrun] Sunny says, "I don't think so"
[shadowrun] Emvee says, "The closest I've got is Mechanics, which isn't very close."
[shadowrun] Emvee says, "And that's just a knowledge skill."
Thaddeus says, "Okay, that's the limit of the range."
Thaddeus says, "I'm calling it back."
TonyThum asks, "any thermo there?"
Thaddeus says, "Didn't see anything human. Plenty of wildlife."
Emvee asks, "So we're headin' t' that bridge? Should we leave a marker, so's we c'n find this road again?"
Thaddeus says (to Emvee), "The GPS'll record our position."
Asher says, "so I guess that's our best bet"
[shadowrun] TonyThum says, "I certainly hope there's no ambush involving a train here"
Asher says, "if we stay by the river it ought to be ok"

Sunny says, "Yeah."

Thaddeus asks, "Okay, so we'll try the rail bridge, then?"

Thaddeus puts the truck in gear and heads off east.

[shadowrun] Emvee asks (of Asher), "But wouldn't it be the same place plus the width of the river?"
Sunny ow ow hey watch it ow.
Thaddeus stops when the drone comes back, and hops out to secure it in place.
Emvee says, "Hope th'bridge's strong."
Thaddeus says, "Gotta juice this thing back up, it's low."
[shadowrun] Asher says, "well, maybe -- it depends if the plan is to catch up directly on the other side, or if the road's further down"
Thaddeus climbs back in *BUMP* *BUMP* *BUMP* more *BUMP*
[shadowrun] Asher says, "I guess, yeah, you could always circle back to the right spot"
Asher says, "oof"
TonyThum mutters, "next time I'm getting a cyberware ass"
GM says, "After a bit of bumping along, you reach the rail bridge."
Thaddeus asks, "Look good to try and cross?"
Thaddeus says, "Probably be even bumpier than the land, but at least it'll be over quick."
[shadowrun] TonyThum asks, "why's he asking us?"
Asher says, "sure"
Emvee gets a good grip on the armrest and the seat.
[shadowrun] GM says, "cause he's the NPC"
[shadowrun] TonyThum says, "Yeah, but we're not truck drivers :)"

[Crows-Nest] TonyThum says, "ever since Stalker, this sort of thing makes me tense and nervous"
Thaddeus says, "Might be a good idea to stick the toys underneath the seats."

Emvee keeps his coat pulled over his usual gear.

Sunny sighs at unreasonable people who don't understand the need for under-barrel-mounted minigrenade launchers and puts her duffel under the seat. Her jacket stays on.

Asher tucks away his pistol behind himself.
TonyThum hides his stuff as well.
Thaddeus pulls up to the crossing and rolls down his window.
Thaddeus asks, "Hey, anybody here?"
Ute_Guard sticks his head out the window, and asks, "Whereyagoin'? Whatyagot?"
Thaddeus says, "Just movin' my buddy here, down to his new place."
Thaddeus says, "Got all his stuff in the back."
Ute_Guard asks, "Oh, yeah?"
Ute_Guard says, "Maybe I should go take a look."
Ute_Guard stands there, tapping his foot.
[Crows-Nest] Asher says, "I guess as an NPC he doesn't have fast talk"

Ute_Guard lifts the gate and heads back inside.

Emvee thrusts his fist forward between the seats. A bolt of lightning arcs through the missing windshield at the biker.

QR-2 screams as he cooks and evaporates, leaving behind only a smoking motorcycle helmet, spinning in the road. And a large fiery motorcycle, heading straight at the truck.

Sunny's hair spreads apart from residual static electricity.
GM says, "Back to the top, it's Thad's turn"
Thaddeus says, "Aw, dreck, gotta dodge this..."
Emvee grins. "Don't get t' try that one too much. 'S kinda fun."

Thaddeus pulls the truck hard right, causing it to go up on two wheels right next to the edge of the cliff.
TonyThum makes a mental note to get Sunny a voucher for a visit at the local hair stylist's

Asher starts breathing again

Emvee asks, "Wan' me t' give it a go now?"
Emvee grins in a slightly disconcerting way.
Thaddeus says, "Not til we're out of trouble. Border's right up ahead."
TonyThum says, "just don't use that tesla coil again"
Thaddeus says, "Okay, here we go, cross-country time."
Thaddeus turns off the road, going slightly uphill through a grassy meadow.
Thaddeus says, "We just go up here on the ridgeline, and down the other side, and we're in Cali."
Sunny says, "We need to re-stow our gear, I guess."
Thaddeus says, "Local Cali cops know about this, but me and some friends, um, encourage them not to check too often."
Thaddeus says, "So we should be good to get through without any attention."
Asher pulls down the cushions around the bullet holes, tosses a few bits of glass out the window, etc
GM says, "About 15 minutes later, Thaddeus pulls back onto a road."
Thaddeus says, "Alright, we're clear, this is Cali."
Thaddeus says, "There's a medkit behind the seat."
Thaddeus asks, "I think I stocked it up last month, anyone know how to use it?"
[shadowrun] Emvee asks, "Magic before mekits or vice versa?"
Asher says, "I'm no pro but I know a thing or two"
[shadowrun] GM says, "once it's been magiced it can't be medkitted"
Asher says, "Emvee can cover me"

Emvee nods.

Emvee presses his fingers against Thad's shoulder.

[shadowrun] Emvee says, "I'll save my spell dice for the drain."
[shadowrun] GM says, "each success on the test either heals one box of damage or reduces the time it takes"
[shadowrun] Emvee says, "Well, wait, high TN. I'll use two spell dice for the spell."
[shadowrun] GM says, "he has 4 boxes of damage now"

Sunny says, "It's about that Thorn guy."
Asher says, "weird-looking guy"

Sunny asks, "Any of you familiar with what happened in Chicago?"

[shadowrun] GM says, "it's general knowledge that for a year the entire city of Chicago was walled up and in quarantine"
[shadowrun] GM says, "but there are a thousand different rumors about why"

Sunny says, "I don't know for sure. But some of my dad's friends had this fun game they liked to play. 'Tell Sunny about bad stuff we've seen and try to give her nightmares.'"
Sunny says, "One of them was involved in reclaiming Chi-town."
Asher says, "well, I'm glad to see they didn't affect you any"
Sunny says, "I'm very emotionally healthy, thankfully."
Sunny says, "Anyway, according to him, the original nuke was sort of a secondary thing"
Sunny says, "The primary thing that caused it being walled off was something that was turning people into bug-people."

Emvee looks around for any nearby bugs.

Asher asks, "so maybe these BTLs came from chicago?"
Sunny shrugs. "We might want to do some digging."
Emvee tries to spot what an ant aura looks like.
Sunny says, "It's possible."
Sunny asks, "The other thing that's got me worried: what did Thorn to Thurgun's hearth spirit?"
GM says (to Emvee), "Ants, not really being intelligent, don't have an aura."
Sunny says, "Like, didn't he say it just went poof? I didn't know they could go poof like that."
Asher says, "oh yeah, I forgot about that"
Asher asks, "maybe Thorn had a spirit of his own back in his room -- did we check?"
Emvee asks, "C'n y' punch a spirit out?"
Sunny says, "I didn't, but that's not my thing."
Sunny says, "I don't know anything really about magic."

Sunny asks, "Did anyone look at Thorn's aura?"
Asher says, "yeah, Thurgun did - he said he didn't have one"

[shadowrun] Emvee asks, "Those are present in the astral plane?"
Asher says, "well, the doctor didn't seem to think so, but he was kind of a skeptical guy"
Asher says, "at least about magic"
[shadowrun] Emvee says, "(Inanimates and unintelligents, I mean.)"
[shadowrun] GM says, "anyhting that's been in the same place long enough is there"
Sunny says, "If Thorn didn't have some other spirit to get rid of Thurgun's, then he had to do it himself"

Emvee peers off into the distance, mumbling to himself. "Guess there's s'me astral stuff wi'out auras, maybe... like walls an' things..."
Asher says, "hmm"

Sunny says, "I've mentioned that we have potentially interesting information for S-K. Maybe we can get some payment out of this."
Sunny says, "But if Seattle is going to be overrun like Chicago, I figured we should be a little ways away."
Asher says, "heh"
Emvee asks, "D'y'know how we c'n contact 'em?"
Sunny says, "No. I'm hoping my fixer will be the go-between"

Asher frowns and steps away from the others for a sec, then pulls out his phone.
[shadowrun] Emvee says, "I'm wondering if there are any races of intelligent insect-like creatures."

[Crows-Nest] Sunny says, "'Honey, have you been feeling bad lately? Uh huh. How many hands do you now have?'"
