Jan says, "Everything."

Lucas says, "But I don't know anything! Bruno hired my friends and me to keep watch on a shop and tell him who came to it and where they went."

Jan says, "Did you see a man who looked about..."

Jan describes Hal.

Lucas says, "I figured he was staking it out to rob it, but nobody much came to it - not even customers - so I got figuring that the owner'd gone away."

[7thsea] Jan asks, "Er. I can't remember what Lis told us about who was meeting with her father. Both Anselme and Hal, or just the former?"

Lucas says (to Remy), "The shop I followed you from."

[7thsea] Lucas says, "Lisanne had never heard of Hal."

[7thsea] Remy says, "mm, just anselme, I think"

Jan asks, "Nobody *much* or nobody at all?"

[7thsea] Lucas says, "Er, wait."

Remy asks (of Lucas), "so, what do you know about the man who ran it? where is he now?"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Aha, yes, she has seen Hal."

[7thsea] Jan says, "Visited her father a few days ago, father came back alone."

Lucas says (to Jan), "My mistake - yeah."

Lucas says (to Remy), "I dunno. I never heard of the place till Bruno told me to stake it out."

Jan asks, "When did you first start watching?"

Remy asks, "how long were you watching it?"

Lucas says, "Except I asked him, last night, when I reported to him - and he told me that if I asked too many questions about the owner he'd send me to join hem."

Remy asks, "Where did you report to him?"

Lucas says (to Jan,Remy), "I started watching it yesterday. You're the first person to go in or out except that girl."

Jim_Crowe says (to Lucas), "oh, so this Bruno knows where the owner is."

Remy says, "I think we may need to talk to Bruno again."

Remy asks, "You think he's mellowed any since our last encounter?"

Jan snorts.

Remy says, "right, me too"

Jan asks (of Lucas), "Where is Bruno?"

Lucas says (to Remy), "At this tavern a couple blocks away from it. I'm supposed to meet him every night to report."

Remy asks, "What's this tavern called?"

[7thsea] Jan asks, "What time is it, again?"

[7thsea] Ender says, "Midafternoon. Ship was waiting for the tide, which is a bit under 2 hours now."

[7thsea] Remy asks, "mm, midafternoonish?"

[7thsea] Remy says, "dratted lag"

Lucas says, "Doesn't have a name. Not even really a tavern - just an old building where they sell cheap rotgut."

Lucas says, "Nobody who's on the up-and-up is supposed to know about it - lot of deals go down there."

Remy says, "A, a den of iniquity if ever I've met one."

Lucas says, "But I could show you to it - for a price."

Jan holds up the guilders he took from the book.

Jan says, "Half of this, to show us where it is."

[7thsea] Remy asks, "book? boot?"

[7thsea] Ender asks, "Book?"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Boot."

[7thsea] Jan says, "SOrry."

[7thsea] Remy says, "ahh"

Lucas exclaims, "But that's my money!"

Remy says, "Not anymore it's not"

Jan says, "It's also your hide."

Jan says, "You want to get that back too, I think."

Jim_Crowe chuckles.

Lucas grumbles. "All right - give it all back to me, and I'll take you there."

[7thsea] Jim_Crowe says, "damn. we are such bullies."

Jan looks at Remy.

[7thsea] Ender says, "Also, half the money from his boot is a guilder and a half."

Remy nods to jan.

Remy says, "After we're there, and you go in first."

Lucas nods. "But I'll give you some advice - free."

Remy draws his gauche.

Remy asks (of lucas), "what?"

Lucas says, "You don't want to hang around waiting in there. After I show you where it is, don't go in until the ninth bell - that's when Bruno's suppose to meet me."

[7thsea] Ender says, "Tide is at the 6th bell."

[7thsea] Remy says, "evening"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Crud."

[7thsea] Remy asks, "if the captain's in jail, will they sail still?"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Captain's probably coming back."

[7thsea] Remy says, "wait, if he's recently escaped, yes, they're sailing soon"

[7thsea] Jan says, "And anyway, we've got a letter. Hal's more important than being on the ship."

[7thsea] Remy says, "not my problem"

Remy says, "That makes sense."

[7thsea] Ender says, "Going AFK for a bit - talk among yourselves."

Jan says, "It's possible."

Jan says, "We shouldn't let him go until Hal's safe."

Jan says, "Lest he bring his friends later."

Jim_Crowe says, "perhaps one of us should watch him until we have what we need."

Jim_Crowe says, "at any rate, the cap'n should be back soon."

Jan nods.

Remy asks, "Could we take some sailors with us?"

Remy says, "have them bring him back here, keep him safe"

Remy says, "while the three of us have a private chat with bruno"

Jan says (to Remy), "But Bruno might not be there until evening."

Jim_Crowe scratches his head. hmm

Remy says, "mm, true, your ship must sail."

[7thsea] Ender says, "I'm assuming your having lots of fun planning, BTW, and there's no need to move the game along until you step back in there and announce your decisions to Lucas."

Remy says, "I forgot, since you never told me"

Jan says, "If he does ultimately serve to be friendly and helpful..."

Jan holds up the bag of silver counts given him by the Inquisition.

[7thsea] Ender says, "That sounds like a decision to me..."

[7thsea] Remy says (to ender), "it had better"

Ender says, "From above, you hear footsteps returning."

Jan heads topside to meet the footsteps.

Jim_Crowe bounds up above decks.

CaptainKluyver is back, and his face is deep red.

CaptainKluyver roars, "YOU!"

Jan says (to Captain), "Sir."

CaptainKluyver asks, "WHAT DID YOU DO?"

[7thsea] Remy says, "hee hee"

Jan says, "We went to see Anselme. He was not there."

CaptainKluyver exclaims, "I send you out with a message, and CLEAR instructions not to show it to anyone - and the next thing I know the Inquisition is pounding in the hatch wantin' to know about it!"

Remy decides this isn't a good time to introduce himself to the captain.

Jan frowns. "I showed it to no on."

Jan pulls the letter from his pocket.

Jim_Crowe says, "oh dear...."

CaptainKluyver asks (of Jan), "So you just handed the message over to whoever was in his office, I suppose?"

Jan hands the sealed letter to the Captain.

CaptainKluyver looks baffled. "Then how did the Inquisitor know its contents?

Jan says, "I do not know them myself, so I cannot say."

Jim_Crowe asks, "Um, if I might be so bold ... what were the contents?"

CaptainKluyver says (to Jim), "That Hal Huygens had come to see him, and we were worried about his whereabouts."

Jan frowns.

Jan asks, "*That* is all that was sealed in the letter?"

Jim_Crowe says, "whatever has the young master gotten himself into now...."

CaptainKluyver says, "Well, some detail about the matter which Huygens had come to see him on, but I cannot share that with you."

Jan nods. "I did not know it was a secret that Hal was missing."

CaptainKluyver says, "The important thing is that Hal's name not be linked to Anselme's. Hmm..."

CaptainKluyver seems to be calming down slightly.

[7thsea] Jan says (to Kluyver), "Well, if you'd *told* us that was the important thing..."

CaptainKluyver says, "I suppose I should have made it clear."

Remy just sort of hangs out at the edge of the crowd.

[7thsea] Jim_Crowe says, "hee"

Jan nods, "Aye, sir."

Jan says, "For now, let me explain what we've seen."

CaptainKluyver says, "In any case, it seems that Inquisitor Valdemort knew of the matter from some other source. In which case, I greatly fear our secrecy was already lost."

Jan takes the captain aside (with Jim and Remy), to explain the events of the day, introducing Remy in the process...

Remy says, "We have evidence that the Inquisition has captured several people from this city."

[7thsea] CaptainKluyver says, "Don't forget Lisanne - she's here too."

Jan also introduces Lisanne, when he gets to her part of the story.

[7thsea] Ender says, "Damn. I really need to give her father a name. Call him - M. Beauregarde."

Jim_Crowe says, "Perhaps we should try to find Hal and get as far as away from here, as quickly as possible."

[7thsea] Ender says, "Also, I just noticed she was Liselle for a while last game. Eagh."

[7thsea] Remy says, "heh, I wasn't sure if that was my fault of yours"

CaptainKluyver sighs. "Aye. The ship needs to be off indeed."

Remy says, "We can find someone who should know where he is, but it won't be until 9th bell"

CaptainKluyver says, "Can I leave you here to take care of the matter? You've done well so far, for the most part."

[7thsea] Jim_Crowe says, "This Bruno might be able to tell us more, but we won't be able to speak to him until late."

CaptainKluyver says, "Well, here it is in the plain, then - as well as his duties to the family, Hal is a courier for the Invisible College."

Jim_Crowe whistles in surprise.

CaptainKluyver says, "His father knows of this and does not disapprove, as long as his activities do not get the family itself in danger. He's made it clear that any trouble young Hal gets into is his own lookout."

[7thsea] Jan says, "Then what are we bothering with? :)"

[7thsea] Remy says, "a plot. shut up"

CaptainKluyver says, "Father Anselme, as you may have guessed, is a scholar and a friend of the College in this area."

Jan asks, "Was Hal's business with him?"

CaptainKluyver says (to Jan), "He puts Hal in touch with those who may have messages for him to carry."

CaptainKluyver asks (of Lisanne), "In this case, I'd imagine that was your father. Does he do - research of any sort?"

Lisanne nods.

Remy asks (of Jan), "do you still have those notebooks?"

Remy says, "I wonder if they might have anything to do with this."

Jan nods, "I do."

[7thsea] Jan asks, "Actually, didn't I make Jim carry them?"

[7thsea] Remy says, "dunno"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Either way."

Jan shows them to the Captain.

CaptainKluyver says, "In any case, if I can get this cargo back home, and let Hal's father know what's happened, we may be able to manufacture some other reason for Hal to have been seeing Anselme. He *does* have legitimate business with us atn times."

CaptainKluyver glances at the books. "I wouldn't know about that. The young Master's tho scholar."

Jan nods.

Jim_Crowe says, "Ah, the innocent bystander ploy? always worked for me."

Jan says, "Perhaps there is another trustworthy scholar in Entour."

Jan looks to Remy.

CaptainKluyver says, "We'll put off as soon as possible, then, before the Inquisition manufacture's some other reason to keep us here."

[7thsea] Jim_Crowe asks, "Someone who has the habit of carving their initials in university benches, perhaps?"

[7thsea] Remy says, "heh"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Someone who can read Thean inscriptions concealed in Biblical illustrations."

Remy says, "Mmm, I could ask my brother, perhaps"

Remy says, "To be honest, I have little contact with the scholars of the University."

CaptainKluyver says, "Oh, one more thing - the Huygens factor in this city doesn't know any of this. So don't mention it to him. So if you need to go to him for help, don't tell him why."

Jan nods.

Jim_Crowe says, "of course."

CaptainKluyver starts bellowing orders. Fortunately, the ship's been holding at ready, so it won't be long before it can leave.

Jim_Crowe goes to get Lucas.

Ender says, "And a bible with only one marginal notation you've seen."

Lucas says, "All right - I will. Just untie me - please? My wrists hurt like Legion."

Jim_Crowe wanders down with Lucas. "Lead on, sirrah."

[7thsea] Lucas asks, "Are you untying him?"

Remy takes his knife, and cuts the ropes.

Jan keeps his club ready.

Remy fails to put his knife away again.

Lucas rubs his wrists, and starts down the dock, glancing back nervously.

Jan follows.

Ender says, "The sailors laugh at him as you pass, and he puts his head down."

Remy walks behind lucas, and motions Jim and Jan to move up to his sides.

Ender says, "You pass the burned out shell of a building. Smoke still hangs in the air."

Jim_Crowe walks nonchalantly along.

Ender says, "No sign of the guards, but a florid man in expensive clothes is standing outside weeping."

Jim_Crowe says, "oh dear...."

Ender says, "You suspect he might be putting it on, because every time the man with him (who is writing stuff in a book) looks away, he rubs his hands and chuckles."

Ender asks, "I wonder what this means?"

[7thsea] Remy says, "heh"

[7thsea] Ender says, "Also, the Huygens family will be disappointed."

[7thsea] Jan says, "Ah, 'insurance' comes to Entour..."

Jim_Crowe says, "oh dear indeed..."

Ender says, "The ship starts to cast off as you get away from the docks, so you guess that once the guards have cleaned up whatever mess the Mate made in rescuing Kluyver, they'll be too late to catch them."

Ender says, "Unfortunately, that means there'll be more guards available to search for you."

Jim_Crowe says (to Lucas), "well, let's get a move on. spit-spot, and all that rot."

Lucas leads you to a low-class street, crowded with ratty merchants.

Remy says, "mm, I haven't spent much time near here."

Ender says, "It's only a few blocks from Lisanne's house, but it's definitely in a lower-class district."

Lucas walks towards a building which seems to have burned at some time in the past, but not been torn down. Only the bottom floor remains. There's nobody around.

[7thsea] (from Jan) A man steps out of a small hovel and addresses Remy. "Oh, hello brother! I didn't know you were coming home today."

Lucas stops when he's still half a street away, and turns into an alley.

[7thsea] Remy says, "hee"

Lucas waits for you to catch up and whispers, "That's it - that half-burned one."

Lucas says, "But they've got people watching who'll notice us if we go closer."

Remy says (to lucas), "alright, thank you"

Lucas asks (of Remy), "Where's my money then?"

[7thsea] Lucas exclaims, "Awwk!"

Remy nods to jan.

Jan hands over the three guilders, plus three of the coins from the pouch.

Jim_Crowe says (to Lucas), "try not to get involved with the inquisition again, hear? Jolly bad for the digestion."

[7thsea] Ender asks, "Are you letting him go, or keeping him there?"

[7thsea] Remy says, "letting him run, I thought"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Well, we've no sailors to guard hi, so he'd probably be deadweight."

[7thsea] Ender says, "(I should say, by the way you're holding your knife, would ho feel free to run away now?)"

Remy puts his knife away.

Jan gives him one more coin. "Friends, now?"

Lucas grabs the money and takes off down the alley.

Lisanne asks, "Are we going in now, or waiting until later?"

Jan nods, "Right. To the University?"

Lisanne says, "I'm glad." She shivers."

Ender says, "As you approach the University, you hear the bells of the cathedral beside the library striking five."

Ender says, "Four hours until you have to 'meet' with Bruno..."

[7thsea] Remy says, "name, dennis, studying, um, merchant type stuff"

[7thsea] Jan asks, "Uh oh, he's an accountant, isn't he?"

Lisanne asks, "Who do we know we can trust here?"

Jan asks, "Remy?"

Remy says, "My brother studies accounting and such. he might know someone."

Remy leads them to wherever his brother would be on the campus.

Lisanne says, "I know a few friends of Father Anselme's, but I they're all priests - and I don't know how many of them might be in the Inquisition."

Ender says, "Accounting is the most boring building on campus."

Ender says, "Right next to it is Classical Studies, which is open and airy and surrounded by a garden."

Ender says, "You can see some accountants looking studying outdoors. Every once in a while they look at up at thu building next door and sigh."

Remy starts looking for Dennis.

[7thsea] Ender says (to Jim), "Er, no. *All* the buildings at Waterloo are ugly."

Ender says (to Remy), "You find him at a bench in the shade, fairly close to the garden."

[7thsea] Jim_Crowe says, "You said Classical Studies was open and airy and had a garden ... not that it wasn't ugly...."

Dennis asks, "Remy! What can I do for you?"

[7thsea] Ender says, "I don't think Waterloo actually has a Classical Studies building."

Remy says, "We've recently discovered some notebooks that we need help deciphering"

Remy says, "In an unused lab in the library"

Dennis flips through the books. "These look like records of experiments - series of dates and times with notations after each.

Dennis says, "I don't think it actually *is* a code. It looks as if they just didn't bother describing what experiments they were observing each time."

[7thsea] Jan asks, "From this we can assume he reads Thean?"

Remy says, "Ahh"

Dennis says, "It's in simple Thean, but it just says 'pressure 2 - time 25' and such."

Jan says, "Mmmm."

Dennis says, "Flips open the second book, and frowns."

[7thsea] Jim_Crowe thinks, IF game design.

Dennis asks, "Were there any more of these?"

Jan says, "Yes."

Jan says, "Many."

Dennis says, "Ah. So you just took one of the earlier ones, then. I see."

Remy asks (of Jan), "You did?"

Jan says, "I meant to take the most recent."

Jan says, "BUt I do not read Thean."

Dennis hands back the books. "Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you can find a description of the experiments, you might be able to figure out what it means."

Jan says (to Dennis), "Another thing."

Remy says (to Dennis), "thank you for your help."

Jan shows him the note in the Bible.

Jim_Crowe says, "We could always just try to return to the lab...."

Dennis says (to Jan), "The dates in the second book are several months before those in the first."

Jan nods.

Jan asks, "Can you read this note?"

Dennis says, "Yes, I meant to ask about that - you said it was an unused lab? Not many are unused, I thought. People are always complaigning about lack of facilities."

Remy says, "There was dust all over the floor."

[7thsea] Jan says, "Aha, they've discovered a way to compress time."

Jim_Crowe asks (of Dennis), "Sure, we'll show you ... but what about the note?"

[7thsea] Jan says, "Ten minutes of experiment, ten weeks of dust accumulate."

Dennis says, "Yes. It says, 'This portrait seems to be a direct copy of that of Thomas of Dunscany...'"

[7thsea] Remy exclaims, "much like 7th sea!"

Dennis breaks off to say, "No, no. I'm afraid I have too much studying to do."

Jan frowns. "Who is that?"

Jan looks at the picture.

Dennis says (to Jan), "Haven't a clue."

[7thsea] Jan asks, "What's the picture look like, anyway?"

Dennis continues, "...but the artist claims (in _Savoire_) not to have read Dunscany!"

Remy says, "'Dunscany' sounds rather avalonian to me."

Jan asks, "Savoire?"

Dennis says, "And on this bookmark is a note - 'Show Dunsany portrait to Jacques next consultation'"

Jan says, "Mmm."

Dennis hands back the bible to Remy. "I have to say, this sounds rather mundane for the urgency I heard in your voice when you arrived."

Jim_Crowe asks, "Any idea who Jacques is?"

Jim_Crowe says (to Dennis), "seems like a lot of powerful people are mixed up in this."

[7thsea] Dennis says, "Er, typo. Meant 'Jaques'."

Remy says (to Dennis), "trust me, what we're involved in is of the greatest urgency"

Jim_Crowe says, "no accounting for tastes...."

Dennis says, "There's a priest at the cathedral by that name..."

Jan says, "Aha."

Dennis pales. "Did you say that you got these from an unused lab in the *library*?

Jim_Crowe nods

Remy asks (of Jan), "that was the library, wasn't it?"

Jan says, "I presume so, from the large number of books stacked on shelves."

Dennis asks, "An entire hall of the library was sealed off last month by the Inquisition. Don't tell me you were in one of *these* rooms?"

[7thsea] Jim_Crowe says, "cue Twilight Zone theme...."

[7thsea] Dennis says, "those"

Jim_Crowe says, "Er."

Jim_Crowe says, "Well."

Jan says (to Dennis), "Yes."

Dennis looks around. "I haven't been talking to you! I've just been sitting here studying my accounting!"

Jan nods.

Remy says, "never repeat this story to anyone"

Dennis exclaims (at Remy), "Yes, yes! Go!"

Remy says (to jan.Jim), "we'd better go"

Jan asks, "Indeed. To see Jacques?"

Jim_Crowe is already on his way out.

Remy says (to Dennis), "thank you for your help. Give my best to mother when you see her."

Jan follows.

Remy leaves

Dennis stares at his book with a vengeance, glancing up only to say farewell and to cast a lingering glance at Lisanne.

[7thsea] Jan says, "Didn't know if Jacques might have been a friend of Anselme's."
