Chiara Venterrini. 

The daughter of unknown parents, she was found abandoned and raised 
by humble weavers.  Early in her life, however, she began to 
manifest unusual qualities of beauty and intelligence -- and an 
irritating habit of getting herself into scrapes from which her 
adoptive parents could not easily rescue her -- and she was sold to 
the courtesan guilds.  There she was schooled and showed great 
promise.  Her particular interest above all else lay in history, but 
she had a compassion for other women regardless of their status.
    During the course of her studies, she went to Dilatente, the 
finishing school for Vodacce fate witches and a center for their 
secret education and for the operations of the Sophia's Daughters. 
She assisted secretly in the illegal education of the noble-born 
fate witches who might one day come to be her enemies; and in the 
process, one of them discovered in her a latent skill that even the 
courtesan tests had failed to reveal: a touch of Sorte of her own, 
so slight and undeveloped as to be almost undetectable. 
    Now Chiara has a dilemma: to seek out the truth of her mysterious 
parentage, which must be at least half noble (and almost certainly 
illegitimate) -- or to avoid the knowledge that might also reveal 
her for what she is, an educated Fate Witch.  She can afford to tell 
no one but the friend who first discovered it about her remarkable 
abilities, lest she be destroyed.  What powers she has uncovered in 
herself, she practices secretly, in private.  And the aims of 
Sophia's Daughters remain near and dear to her heart, to grant women 
a freedom that would make her own situation less unusual.
