GM says, "YHeh, right, and talking rabbits. And pestering hawks."
Sebastien asks, "was the helpful rabbit ever helpful?"
GM says, "And then to Louis' memory where you found out that L'Empereur killed the Heirophant."
Charles says (to Sebastien), "We haven't tried calling on it."
Raelynn arrives, looking for booty.
GM says (to Sebastien), "Yeah, that favor hasn't been called upon yet."
GM says, "You have, uh, his name? Something to call him with."
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "Now Charles just hopes he can be called outside Matushka's Forest."
[Crows-Nest] Charles says, "Yeah, the thought did cross my mind."
GM asks, "Any other questions? Anyone want to spend any XP?"

[ussura] Raelynn says (to GM), "My notes indicate I spent XP to buy archery"
[ussura] Raelynn says, "i just want to make sure we agree on that"

[ussura] Charles asks, "Also, I *think* I just spent a bunch of XP recently. Does that match your records, or should I recap it to you?"

[ussura] Charles says (to Pyotr), "It's a very specialized field, but you should hear some of the epics that have beenw ritten about it."
[ussura] GM says (to Charles), "Also, was your mud-mail to me that you'd have to leave early? I didn't get a chance to read it."
[ussura] GM says (to R), "Excellent."
[ussura] Charles says (to GM), "It's that I might have to leave earlier, yeah. Depending on how late we go."
[ussura] GM asks (of R), "Do you have a bow and arrows, too?"
[ussura] GM says, "We'll try to keep it to 3 hours--Sara is having folks over this evening and we have to clean ;-)"

GM says, "Eventually, a dim light appears. It seems to be the outline of the door."
Raelynn blinks
GM says, "Which then opens onto a completely snowy wood. The light outside is blue tinged with red."
Sebastien says, "goodness gracious"
Charles says, "I think this is our stop."
Pyotr exclaims, "Last one out's a rotten egg!"
Pyotr rushes out, axe drawn.
Raelynn asks, "he doesn't know the meaning of prudence, does he?"
Era emerges more cautiously.
Charles avoids being in between Pyotr and the door.
GM says, "Pyotr sinks into the snow--it's about two feet deep."
Sebastien says, "I don't think we're in Montaigne anymore, Pyotr"
Pyotr exclaims, "Ahh, just like home!"
[ussura] Era says, "Not that that's difficult, or anything. ;-)"
[Crows-Nest] Raelynn asks, "isn't Pyotr like only 3 feet tall?"
[Crows-Nest] Pyotr exclaims, "hey!"

Charles climbs out, with one hand on Pyotr's should for balance as he steps into the snow.

[Crows-Nest] GM says, "You have 'Small', which I forget what it means in terms of actual inches."
Raelynn looks out nervously
[Crows-Nest] Raelynn says, "my notes say 4' 7" unfortunately"
Charles offers a hand to anyone still inside.
Raelynn says, "i can't walk in that"
Pyotr says (to Raelynn), "COme on out, the weather's fine."
Sebastien pokes his head out.
Raelynn says, "that's gonna come up to my neck"
Charles asks, "Do you need to be carried?"
Pyotr says, "Hmm, anyone see a tree? I can make some snowshoes."
Era says, "I think I can whip together some rough snow-shoes for you. It may take a few minutes, though."
Charles glances around for any conveniently abandoned sledges.
Sebastien says, "is there any civilization around? I am not sure that spending the night out here is the wisest idea"
[Crows-Nest] Era exclaims, "timing!"
[ussura] Pyotr says (to era), "yay ussurans"
GM says, "No abaondoned sledges, but the more woodsy members of the party do see suitable pine trees, etc."
Pyotr says, "You guys wait here, we'll go make shoes."
Raelynn says (to Charles), "if you and Pyotr can break a path, I can probably just walk in the tunnel or something"
Pyotr heads for the trees, expecting Era to follow his trail.
Raelynn asks (of Sebastien), "Don't you miss home, right about now?"
Era says (to Charles), "When the snow is this deep, its easiest to burrow down in it, and make a small snow cave. Its similar to what dogs and wolve do in the winter, but on a slightly larger scale."
Sebastien says, "especially after the last glimpse of it"
Sebastien says, "but I am sure my travels will eventually lead me back there -- to report back for further duty, if nothing else"
Era follows Pyotr, with an eye toward some of the smaller, suppler branches, and unsheathes her knife.
Charles explores a bit while the others work on the shoes.
Pyotr cuts down some branches and hands them to Era for trimming.
Raelynn huddles in the egg, half afraid the egg-door will close and kidnap her
GM says (to Charles), "The sky is tinged with red on the low cloud ceiling."
Sebastien stands scrunched in the doorway, looking around.
[ussura] Pyotr asks (of gm), "do we need to roll anything or are we good?"
Era peels and weaves the withes into the classic snow-shoe shape, and test them on her feet.
[ussura] Charles asks, "Can I tell what time of day it is?"
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "Nah, you're good."
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "(channel)"
Pyotr cuts enough branches, then starts shaping them.
Era starts weaving a pair for whomever else in the party may be interested.
[ussura] GM asks (of Charles), "Your first thought is that the red means sunrise or sunset, but there seems to be too much ambient light for that--maybe there's just a lot of snow to reflect?"
Pyotr says (to Era), "we might as well make enough for everyone."
Pyotr keeps weaving, then finishes, straps his on, and carries them back to the group.
[ussura] GM says, "The sun is nowhere to be found, just like grey days on Avalon back hom.e"
[ussura] GM says, "Er, home."
Era says (to Pyotr), "Sounds good to me. With these, we may not have the mobility we're used to, but we'll keep our head above the water, frozen though it may be."
[ussura] Charles says, "I'll try a Weather roll to interpret the red clouds."
[ussura] GM says, "Does someone have.. yeah, that."
[ussura] GM says, "Sure--use Wits."

Sebastien says, "perhaps speckles would be safer"
Pyotr says (to Sebastien), "I can give you any color you want, as long as that color is brown."
Sebastien says, "well, then, brown with brown speckles it is"
Pyotr hands Raelynn a pair, and shows her how to strap them on.
Raelynn says (to Pyotr), "thanks"
[ussura] GM asks (of Charles), "You work out that the clouds are probably reflecting red light from the ground. A lot of it. A city, lit up with red lights? In the middle of the day?"
Raelynn straps them on tightly, and steps out of the ed
[Crows-Nest] Raelynn says, "er egg"
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "Oho."
Raelynn sinks down a bit, but notes happily that the snow doesn't come up to her neck
Pyotr says, "Our best bet is to find a safe place for the night."
Charles says, "Hmm. That red... it could be a fire."
Pyotr says, "Probably down in those woods are best."
Raelynn says, "ooh, a warm place!"
Sebastien exclaims, "a fire? lead on!"
[Crows-Nest] Raelynn says, "i guess my dancing skill is worthless here"
Era says (to Charles), "That's a pretty large fire, if so. We should be careful."
[Crows-Nest] GM laughs.
Sebastien steps gingerly onto the snow with his shoes.
Charles says, "We may want to try heading *away* from it, in case it's oving."
Charles says, "I'm oging to try to get a better view of it."
Pyotr says, "Hmm, forest fires usually aren't a problem here."
[Crows-Nest] Era says, "Oh, come on, Sebastian, its no more awkward than those Montaigne heels I"
Charles clambers up the most climbable-looking tree.
[Crows-Nest] Sebastien says, "ha ha"
[Crows-Nest] Era says, "'ve seen you favor in court."
Sebastien says (to Era), "it's true, I've received many approving comments about the strength of my ankles"
Era says (to Sebastien), "That is more than I needed to know about you, sir."
[ussura] Raelynn asks, "are we all still carrying packs?"
[ussura] Pyotr says, "I am, dunno about you"
[ussura] Sebastien says, "I assume, yeah"
[ussura] Charles says, "I am. Although I probably set it down to climb hte tree."
GM says (to Charles), "The ground slopes upwards from where you are (towards the red), so even from the top you'd probably only see more trees."
[ussura] Pyotr says, "don't let the tree shoot you again"
Charles says, "Whatever the light is coming from is that way. It might e in our best interests to go the other way."
GM says, "It might not be too far up to the top of this hill, though."
Pyotr says, "Let's get a look."
Pyotr stomps uphill.
Era says, "Matushka sent us here for a reason. We should go on."
Charles says, "Alright."
Raelynn takes one step forward to follow, and falls flat on her face in the snow
Charles says, "I just hope we don't need to find out how fast we can run like this."

Sebastien says, "oh dear"
GM says (to Raelynn), "Geez, that's cold."
Sebastien waddles over to help Raelynn up.
Raelynn says (to Sebastien), "Thanks. These snowshoes are hard to get used to"
Era says (to Raelynn), "Try this, dear - watch me. <Era proceeds to walk with a distinct roll>"
Sebastien says, "I suppose telling you to think of it as not stepping on your dance-partner's dress would be of little help"
Raelynn imitates Era, exaggerating the roll slightly into a swagger, as she follows
Raelynn says (to Sebastien), "hee hee"
Sebastien says, "but perhaps it is also like not stepping on your ow"
Sebastien says, "n"
[ussura] Charles says, "I'm surprised Sebastien hasn't compared them to raquettes."

Raelynn pants as she crests the top of the hill
GM says, "At the top, there's still a lot of trees, but peering through the trees, you get a glimpse of a flickering red."
Pyotr stays behind the ridge as he tries to see what's burning.
Sebastien says, "my, the exercise required is certainly energetic, but the resulting view is spectacular"
Raelynn sniffs the air

GM says, "You hear a faint popping sound, too. No particular smell, though."

Era examines the flames, trying to see what exactly is burning.
Charles asks, "No smoke?"
Raelynn asks, "if something is burning, there would be a smell, wouldn't there?"
GM says (to Charles), "At least, not here."

Pyotr says, "Well, let's get closer."
Pyotr stalks downhill towards the flicker.
Charles licks his finger and tests te wind.
Raelynn checks her sorcery-radar to figure out if there is any magic being performed
GM says (to Charles), "it's blowing perpendicular to you and the light."
Sebastien says (to Charles), "I believe the presence of smoke is thought to indicate fire, but the converse is not necessarily the case"

Raelynn thinks back to her Natural Philosophy lessons. "What burns without smoke or smell?"
GM says, "Until finally, you make it to a clearing, and see beyond the next ridge an enormous wall of fire."
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says (to Raelynn), "Water, of course."
Sebastien says, "wait a minute .."
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "Don't tell me nobody was expecting that."
[Crows-Nest] Sebastien exclaims, "I figured we were still in the egg!"
Pyotr says, "Ah, I've never been here before."
[Crows-Nest] Pyotr says (to maxwell), "I was ready for it"
[Crows-Nest] Sebastien says, "I guess we might still be"
Charles picks up a branch and pokes the end into the wall.

Raelynn says (to Sebastien), "I don't fancy being Rotisserie Rae"

[Crows-Nest] Era exclaims, "ha!"
[ussura] Raelynn says, "katre is about to show it to me on the book"
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "I bet Charles wants to be the first human to touch both the Seventh Sea and the Wall of Fire."
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "Yay ;-)"
[Crows-Nest] Charles says (to Maxwell), "Mmm..."
[ussura] Raelynn says, "okay, i know what it is now"
GM says, "Some of you have heard of this before, and those that haven't are told by those who have. This would be the fire-wall, erected many years ago by the Cathayans for unknown reasons."
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "after that, a Drachen."
Raelynn looks at the wall with some respect
Pyotr says, "I've always wanted to visit."
Pyotr walks closer.
GM says, "You make your way around the ridge, and see where the tree-line suddenly ends abruptly, about 100 yards from the edge of the flames."
Sebastien says, "I seem to recall it is rumored to move around"
Pyotr looks for a rock, he wants to throw it at the wall.
Sebastien says, "I am not sure if it moves as the tides or more suddenly"
Raelynn asks (of Pyotr), "what if the wall retaliates?"
Charles approaches it.
GM says, "It's not as hot as you would imagine, but you can still feel the warmth, and the snow is shallower around here."
Pyotr says (to Raelynn), "Um, then don't stand near me."
Era says, "Keeping a safe distance seems wise. <Era examines the ground for any pattern of burn marks>"
Pyotr gets close and hurls his stone into the wall.
[Crows-Nest] Pyotr sings "I'm gonna make the wall mad"
[Crows-Nest] Raelynn makes a snowball and throws it at Pyotr's head
[Crows-Nest] Pyotr says, "luckily for me it melts before it reaches me"
GM says, "There seems to be a swath where the wall has moved in the past, though it's not moving a lot right now. You do see, hmm, waves of flame zoom along the wall from south to north, making it buckle out by several feet."
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "Nah, it's just a slushee."
[Crows-Nest] Pyotr says, "heh"
GM says, "(the rock disappears in the flame)"
Charles approaches the wall with his branch, and pushes one end in.
[Crows-Nest] Era asks, "Can we see through the flames at all, or is it so thick its opaque?"
Sebastien says, "who had that melted metal object from the embassy? I wonder if the fires that melted it may have been these"
GM says (to Charles), "the end of your stick utterly ignites."
Pyotr says (to Sebastien), "I hope Alix didn't have it."
Raelynn says, "I don't even know how to even try sketching this"
Raelynn says, "no one will ever believe I am here, anyway"
[ussura] GM says (to Era), "It's opaque, yeah."
Charles pulls it back and looks at it speculatively.
GM says (to Charles), "the end smoulders."
GM says, "(what's left of it)"
Raelynn says (to Charles), "you can auction it off!"
[ussura] Charles says, "It doesn't stay aflame? Interesting."
Raelynn says, "authentic remnants of the firewall"
Raelynn says, "i bet you will find collectors who would love that"
[ussura] Pyotr says, "This would be perfect for drying Montainaigian laundry"
[ussura] Charles says, "(Although I guess it could just be too green.)"
[ussura] GM says (to Charles), "Most of what you thrust into it burned away."
Charles asks, "Who would believe it?"
Raelynn says, "people who buy snake oil, I guess"
Charles gets closer, taking out one of his spare knives.
Raelynn asks, "anyway, are we even going to try to get through?"
Sebastien says, "I am not quite sure how"
Raelynn says, "so let's turn back"
Charles reaches out, holding it at arm's length, and touches the blade to the fire.
Sebastien says, "this may, in fact, indicate that we have reached our destination"
Sebastien says, "as I believe Breslau is reputed to be quite near this wall, though I don't know which part of the wall we have ended up near"
Pyotr says, "Without knowing which way we could be in trouble."
Era says, "But what are we to do here? There is no obvious task, quest, or anyone in need of aid."
GM says, "Suddenly, as you are all standing around discussing things, the wall drops away utterly in the 5 feet or so near where you're standing. Immediately, you hear what you couldn't before--gruff voices, galloping hooves, and panting."
Pyotr says, "Maybe we can see the lights at night."
Pyotr pulls his axe and moves to the side of the entryway.
Era says, "But then Matushka can be very direct sometimes."
[ussura] Charles says (to Sebastien), "Possibly the part where Samurai wander and they don't speak Ussura."
[ussura] Sebastien says, "hee hee"
Sebastien says, "goodness"
GM says, "A young woman with olive skin rushes through. You see her being pursued by several shouting men on horseback."

[ussura] Charles asks (of GM), "Was I able to touch the wall with the knife before it fell away?"

Charles plunges it into the snow.

GM says, "And, hey, you all did fun dramatic things during this battle, so 2 drama dice all around."
Sebastien says, "hooray"

Charles says, "Excellent."
[ussura] Charles asks, "Deshouldered is still alive, right?"
woman, exhausted, passes out.
[ussura] GM says, "Yeah."
Sebastien says, "oh dear"
Sebastien tries to pick her up and move her out of the snow
Pyotr starts setting up a tent
Sebastien says, "there hardly seemed to be a chance to mention this before, but I believe she is a Fhideli -- one of the Ussuran gypsies"
Sebastien says, "I didn't realize they had any special power over the wall of fire"
[ussura] Charles says, "Oh, wait. He was still on a horse, wasn't he? I'm sorry -- I'm not thinking straight. Didn't get enough sleep last night."
Charles asks, "Do you tink we were sent here to rescue her?"
[ussura] GM says, "Heh. Yeah, the three that escaped were deshouldered, unscathed, and desaddled."
Sebastien says, "it could be -- the word she called out was the Fhideli word for Matushka, I believe"
Charles looks over the bodies for anything significant.
Sebastien says, "but perhaps she was just using that to ask us for succor"
[ussura] Sebastien says, "ha ha ha"
Pyotr gets the tent ready and helps Sebastien carry her inside.
GM says (to Charles), "They have fine weapons, except that some ruffian seems to have severed the bowstring on one of the bows. Each also either carried a sword or a dagger."
[ussura] Charles asks, "Any insignia, ID, papers...?"
Sebastien asks (of Pyotr), "should we let her sleep? or try and wake her?"
GM says, "And, hey, there's a pin on one of the men with a symbol that looks similar to the one on your medallion."
Sebastien puts down the woman, and gets the blanket out of his pack to put over her.
Era says (to Sebastien), "If she passed out from a wound, then we'd best wake her, but if simply from exhaustion, it is safe to let her sleep."
Pyotr says (to Sebastien), "She seems exhausted, and we don't speak her language, anyway."
Charles takes the pin and compares them.
[ussura] Sebastien asks, "where did the medallion come from again?"
[ussura] Charles says, "My father."
GM says (to Charles), "It has a similar look, but the actual symbols are clearly different."
[ussura] Sebastien says, "hunh"
[ussura] Raelynn says, "oh yeah, at some point, i would like to know if i can reclaim my arrows"
[ussura] Sebastien says, "you can probably steal their extras"
Charles asks, "There was another piece of metal with strange symbols on it at some point, wasn't there?"
[ussura] GM says, "Several were stuck into a guy who is on the other side of a wall of fire."
Charles asks, "From the fire, I think?"
[ussura] GM says, "But, what Sebastien said."
Sebastien says, "indeed there was"
Era attempts to round up the horses.
Charles looks up at the wall. "The other fire, I mean."
[Crows-Nest] Maxwell says, "It had symbols? I thought it was just a misshapen lump."
[ussura] Sebastien says, "I think Era still had it"
Charles says, "Do we still have it? I'd like to compare it to these."
[ussura] GM says (to Charles), "Now I have to look up what I said about it before ;-)"
[ussura] Charles says (to GM), "I don't remember either. I'm just going by what inky said :)"
[ussura] Sebastien | It's very hard--nothing you have seems to scratch it. It seems to have melted in some fire a long time ago, though. And there may be some sort of markings on it."

Charles tries to scratch the back of the pin.
Era carefully approaches one of the horses, hand out.
GM says (to Charles), "Your fingernail doesn't scratch it,but your dagger does."
Charles says, "Not the same metal."
Charles asks (of Era), "Do you have that piece of metal from the basement?"

[ussura] GM says, "And yeah--there are a couple symbols on their paraphenalia that are presumably written in Cathayan, and they match both the metal and the medallion."
[ussura] GM says, "Though none of the symbols are a direct match."
GM says, "Also, Era manages to use her winning charms to lead back two saddled horses."
[ussura] Era exclaims, "yay!"
[ussura] Sebastien says, "nice work"

Charles says, "I wonder if the lady speaks any language among us."
Charles says, "We'll have to ask her when she recovers."
